KABOOM!: Adelaide Fringe 2025 Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars for chaotic, crazy science and BIG explosions.
Review by Claire Davill
Magnus Danger Magnus (yes, that IS his legal name, he assures us) brings a high energy science show filled with explosions, smoke, glowing liquids and a spectacular finale of expanding elephant toothpaste.
Magnus begins the show with a caveat – he isn’t qualified in any way. He doesn’t have a Bachelors degree, a Masters or a PhD, but he does have ADHD – and with that, you suddenly realise you’re not only attending an educational science show, you’re attending a wonderfully neuro-affirming show. Many kids in the audience (and quite a few adults too) instantly feel seen, and encouraged. Neurodiversity and science mix well, even if it means this show constantly teeters on the edge of absolute chaos.
The show moves at a frenetic pace as items explode, catch fire and spew copious smoke. Magnus explains the science behind each experiment and keeps the audience engaged throughout. Expect to become a safety warden, reminding Magnus “gloves and goggles!”
Some of the explosions are very loud, but you are warned ahead of time, and you can request hearing protection on your way in. Fingers in ears is sufficient though, and the result is shrieks of delight and awe from the audience.
KABOOM! is performing until 23 March 2025 at The Virago, Gluttony.
