National Parks South Australia Park of the Month for July 2018
You’re invited by National Parks South Australia to celebrate Kangaroo Island’s national parks and reserves for Park of the Month this July.
Winter on Kangaroo Island is a great time to take up one of the spectacular walking trails on the Island. From Cape Willoughby in the East to Flinders Chase in the West, and not forgetting the epic KI Wilderness Trail, of course, there are walks aplenty to entertain abilities of every kind. And, what better way to end a walk than to cosy up to a fire at one of the idyllic cottages?
With the recent rains the Island has turned a lush green, the moody skies and sporadic rainbows add a spectacular backdrop to the beauty of the island; earlier sunsets and abundance of wildlife, revelling in the vegetation that has come to life, provide the perfect filter for a novice or professional photographer alike to snap exquisite photos of the Island’s dramatic coast, rolling hills and idyllic valleys.
Kangaroo Island has a well-earned reputation as an amazing spot to visit, but with so much to do, it’s hard to know where to start. Lucky for you National Parks SA have collated some tips and resources to help you make the most of the island’s unique scenery, wildlife and heritage.
Seven bucket list parks on Kangaroo Island
Baudin Conservation Park
This lesser-known park is only 10 minutes’ drive from the ferry port at Penneshaw. If you’re lucky you might spot tammar wallabies, little penguins or endangered glossy black cockatoos.
Cape Gantheume Conservation Park
Take a self-guided drive along D’Estrees Bay, marvel at the abundant wetland birdlife and rugged coastal scenery and stay in a campsite by the beach.
Flinders Chase National Park
This iconic park is a must-see when you visit KI landmarks, as it’s where you’ll find the world-famous Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch.
Lathami Conservation Park
This petite park is dedicated to the careful nurturing and protection of glossy black cockatoos. These beautiful birds can only be found on Kangaroo Island.
Lashmar Conservation Park
A favourite for beach lovers, Lashmar Conservation Park adjoins the long sandy beach at Antechamber Bay. The park is an ideal location for swimming, fishing and birdwatching and is just a short drive from Cape Willoughby Lightstation.
Kelly Hill Conservation Park
Discover the magical underground world of Kelly Hill Caves and admire the ornate cave decorations. For the bold and inquisitive, there are also adventure caving tours that allow you to crawl through the underground maze.
Seal Bay Conservation Park
Seal Bay has been home to an Australian sea lion population for thousands of years. Take a guided tour into the heart of the sea lion colony or set your own pace on the boardwalk.
Stay in heritage light keeper accommodation
Cape Borda Lightstation
Explore the remote area of Cape Borda during the day, then spend the night in heritage accommodation beside the Cape Borda Lightstation.
Cape Willoughby Conservation Park
Cape Willoughby is one of the very few places where you can stay in a light keeper’s cottage. You will find two cottages set on the rugged eastern point of the island overlooking the treacherous seas of Backstairs Passage.
Cape du Couedic in Flinders Chase National Park
Enjoy a spectacular sunset and the peaceful seclusion of a heritage-listed light keeper’s cottage at Cape du Couedic in Flinders Chase National Park. A unique opportunity to stay next to a working lighthouse, which is still used to warn mariners of the land ahead.
Challenge yourself on the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail
The KI Wilderness Trail is a 61-kilometre, five-day trek. The trail weaves its way through the most botanically unique area in all of South Australia before reaching the rugged, remote and spectacular coastline of the Southern Ocean.
