Meet Trixie the Cow at Adelaide Botanic Garden | 19 Jan 2016

If you hear moo’ing at Adelaide Botanic Garden on Tuesday 19 January, don’t be alarmed – it’s just a real life cow, Trixie, saying g’day to visitors during the Garden’s School Holiday Program!

Trixie will be under the big tree next to the Garden’s City Crop between 11am and 2:30pm and children will be able to pat her, hand feed her fresh lucerne cut from the Crop, and watch her keeper milk her by hand.

Alongside the free visit (no bookings required to meet and greet Trixie), children will also have the opportunity to join a milk bottle cow figurine-making session ($10). The cow figurines double as garden pots and children will go home with herbs planted in them!

A pedal-powered bicycle milkshake bar, thanks to the award-winning Botanic Gardens Restaurant, will be set up nearby, where you can make your own milkshake for $4.

Acting director of the Botanic Gardens of South Australia, Janice Goodwins, said Trixie’s visit was not only a fun School Holiday outing for the whole family, it also carries key messages about where our food comes from and the importance of plants.

“Having Trixie here will be a real treat because children can make the connection between lucerne in the ground, Trixie feeding and the dairy products many of us consume each day – and then they can top the visit off with a yummy milkshake!”

Trixie – a Holstein cow from Misty Brae Holsteins at Hindmarsh Tiers, Fleurieu Peninsula – is visiting as part of Adelaide Botanic Garden’s wider School Holiday Program (for 5-12 year-olds), which kicks off on Monday 11 January and runs until Friday 22 January.

Other activities – most of which require a booking and are selling out fast – include making ice cream, magical fairy gardens, or garden critters using botanical bits; painting botanical masterpieces with watercolours; and discovering Aboriginal Dreaming stories. Visit the Botanic Gardens of South Australia website for the full program.
