Penfold Park Playground Magill

The upgrade of Penfold Park Playground in Magill has really enhanced this wonderful park in the foothills of Adelaide. This is a huge, semi-shaded playground where a variety of challenges awaits, and there are many facilities to make this park an all-day destination.
The new central climbing tower at Penfold Park Playground boasts a climbing net and crow’s nest, with a huge tube slide attached. The tube slide is not too fast and has windows to reduce darkness inside, making it less intimidating for younger kids.
Ninja Obstacle Course at Penfold Park Playground
Surrounding the central tower is a wood-based ninja warrior obstacle course, with bright start and finish signs. The course includes monkey bars, stepping stones, ladder and slide, cargo net, climbing poles with tightropes, and a wobbly balance beam. Some of these obstacles are quite challenging and suited to older children, but there are easy options for younger kids.
Near the finish of the obstacle course is a large double flying fox. When we visited, only one flying fox seat was in place. The second seat will be an all-abilities seat and will be installed as soon as a required part is shipped. The flying fox is not shaded, so check the temperature of the seats before hopping on during hot weather.
Musical Instruments at Penfold Park Playground
There’s some wonderful musical instruments to try out here too. These are the most melodic we’ve heard in any playground, and with the bright colours, are very inviting for kids to play. You’ll find a xylophone, hand drum and unique flower-shaped xylophones here.
This area of the playground also has some stepping stone logs, and a versatile cubby house/shopfront/puppet theatre.
There is a big basket swing, as well as a variety of regular and toddler-friendly swings.
Don’t forget to check out the communication boards placed throughout the playground. These are highly useful for non-verbal people and invite others to consider how we communicate.
Nature Play
The playground occupies only a small part of this large park. There are wooded areas nearby with plenty of material for nature play and cubby building. The groves of deciduous trees provide amazing shade on sunny days and are perfect for games of hide and seek under the branches.
The opposite end of the park contains two tennis courts and a basketball ring.
There’s a big stone bridge for running over and even under, as well.
There are plenty of picnic opportunities in the park, including two rotundas, shaded benches and tables, and a barbeque.
There are toilets located near the carpark off of The Parade, across the stone bridge from the playground.
Things to consider:
- This is a large park, so while the playground is away from any roads, it isn’t fenced and you’ll need to keep an eye on little ones.
- There’s plenty of large shade sails over the playground, but they don’t cover all equipment. Bring hats and sunscreen.
- There’s a shaded car park off of The Parade (just west of Coach road), by the toilet block. You can also access the park from Romalo Ave to the north.
- There is also a bus stop right by the car park on the Parade, which is serviced by the H23 and H24 bus routes.
