Victoria Park Loop

The Victoria Park Loop is a great place for families to take their bikes for a ride away from the dangers of the road or to simply walk the dog in open space away from the traffic.

We are so fortunate in Adelaide to have acres and acres of safe, open green space on the edge of the city free for us to use each and every day.  The Park Lands Trail is an Adelaide City Council project that so far features 27km of pathways designed for use by walkers, runners and cyclists, as well as being wheelchair and pram accessible.

Plus Victoria Park has a couple of fabulous nearby cafes that are a great add-on to a walk or a bike ride in the park. Read our review of Ballaboosta or Veloprecinct.

The Victoria Park Loop is 2.5km long and is a gravel track that runs from Wakefield Street over towards Greenhill Road and back around again.  The circuit features a series of outdoor fitness stations containing an assortment of different equipment – a free outdoor gym!  In the middle is a large open expanse of grassland and sports fields, perfectly suited to flying kites, remote control airplanes or helicopters and playing ball sports.

There are four fitness stations along the loop, each one with a variety of equipment to play on or perhaps take a little more seriously with a workout.  Most of the instructions are missing, but they are all fairly easy to use.

Victoria Park has undergone a huge transformation over the past few years since it stopped operating as a racecourse.  Parallel paved paths run east to west from Fullarton Road to East Terrace and structured landscaping has created peaceful areas to sit down and take a break.  There will also be a lot more shade once the trees grow.

There are drinking fountains at the Fullarton Road entrance as well as a couple along the path near East Terrace.  The public toilets at the Wakefield Road end are usually unlocked.  Along the East Terrace side of Victoria Park you can also discover the Sweat Course!

The Victoria Park Criterium Track located within the Victoria Park loop is a 1.1 to 1.4km circuit often used for official events and therefore unavailable for general public use during these times.  The track is designed to accommodate all types of cyclists from racers to casual riders.  It is home to criterium racing and pedal prix events and large international events such as V8 Racing and the International Horse Trials.  Being so smooth and without any obstacles it’s also the perfect spot to learn to ride a bike.

The track is ideal for any pace you choose – walk, run or ride – and the fitness stations make for fun stops along the way.

This area is a beautiful part of Adelaide, very family-friendly and the ideal place to encourage an active lifestyle.
