SA Giving Week | Easy Ways for Families to Give Back | 4-8 May 2026
SA Giving Week 2026: Easy Ways for Families to Give Back
SA Giving Week 2026 runs from 4 – 8 May, encouraging South Australians to volunteer, donate and support charities and their local community.
This statewide initiative highlights the importance of philanthropy, volunteering and community giving, bringing together charities, businesses and individuals to strengthen a culture of giving across South Australia. It is led by organisations including Philanthropy Australia and Creative Australia.
The aim is simple: to inspire more people to contribute – whether that’s giving time, money, skills or support to causes that make a difference.
How You Can Make a Difference
SA Giving Week is a great reminder that giving back doesn’t need to be complicated. When we asked our team about their own experiences, one thing stood out – there are so many different ways to contribute. Often, it’s the small, practical acts that fit easily into everyday life that have a significant impact on the lives of those around us.
Giving can take many forms:
- Donate to a cause you care about or set up a regular monthly contribution
- Raise awareness about a cause that’s important to you
- Donate goods to RSPCA South Australia, Salvation Army or your local community centre
- Donate blankets, towels and pet supplies to Minton Farm Animal Rescue Centre
- Contribute to drives like Share the Dignity
- Support people in need through simple acts:
- Read with children at school
- Spend time with residents in aged care
- Help at school breakfast programs
- Make sandwiches or care packs with local groups like The Community Kitchen
- Provide meals for families in your school or community
- Get involved in your school and local community:
- Assist at excursions, quiz nights, discos or family events
- Coach, mentor or support kids’ sport
- Join your school, kindy or playgroup committee
- Help out at local events, fundraisers or community initiatives
- Share ideas or feedback with your local council
- Support the environment
- Volunteer with Conservation Volunteers Australia
- Join clean-up events like Clean Up Australia Day
- Help care for parks and shared community spaces
- Give back in ways that work for you – whether that’s ongoing support or helping out when you can.:
- Help with Scouts Australia South Australia or local groups via committees or working bees
- Take part in fundraising for organisations like Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia
- Get involved in small initiatives like charity gift wrapping
- Support breast cancer awareness through advocacy and education
- Share resources with neighbours through Buy Nothing groups or sharing sheds
Getting Kids Involved in Giving
Getting kids involved in giving back is a great way to help them build empathy and a sense of community while doing something positive.
Simple, hands-on ways to start include:
- Collecting bottles and cans and letting kids choose which charity the money goes to
- Encouraging kids to join Scouts, Guides or their school’s community outreach programs
- Getting involved in fundraising events like sausage sizzles – they may even be able to organise their own fundraiser at school.
- Donating items or choosing a charity to support as a family
- Joining a local clean-up or community activity like Clean Up Australia Day, or planting and bird tagging at Frahn’s Farm
