There’s a lot to love about Sing, from the people who brought us The Secret Life of Pets, Despicable Me and Minions.
If you’ve ever watched TV programs like The Voice or Australian Idol and felt your heart swell with joy when you hear someone truly fabulous sing, then this movie is for you.
Sing is set in a world like ours but everyone is an animal, and focuses on a group of characters from all walks of life. They put themselves forward at an audition for a singing competition, run by a koala named Buster Moon, whose theatre is on the brink of ruin.
The movie focuses on each of the animals who makes it through the audition process, and flicks in between their busy rehearsal schedule at the theatre and their home lives.
Part of the beauty of Sing is that it’s easy to identify with the characters, who may not all have the perfect lives on paper, and face many personal challenges, but who show resilience and courage. Sing manages to build so much depth in the characters and the storylines, making it all so real, you’ll forget you’re watching an animated film with animals. A parent who has lost their way, but realises in time to tell their child “I’m so proud of you,” is just one poignant moment.
There’s a few good take-home messages for younger movie goers about not giving up and meeting challenges, and in fact there are lessons for everyone, no matter what your age. The theme of ‘Don’t let fear stop you from doing the thing you love’ is a lesson for us all.
There were a few sad moments in the movie – not for the five year old with me, but for those with mummy hormones coursing through their systems – many many funny moments (some of the humour geared towards the grown-ups in the audience) and an episode of mild peril. For the most part Sing was wildly entertaining and had people tapping their toes to the musical numbers and clapping as the credits rolled.
The performances at the much anticipated concert, are totally captivating. When our stars come together to “just do what they love to do”, the result is magic. Uplifting songs with meaningful lyrics, amazing vocals and a brilliant musical score bring some classic songs to life on the stage. Watch out for Meena, the timid teenage elephant (played by US singer Tori Kelly), who thankfully overcomes stage fright and brings some magic to the classic Stevie Wonder song, ‘Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing’. It’s a treat for the ears.
With a star studded cast (animals are given voices by Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, and others – who all showcase their own singing), slick animation, and some fabulous musical moments, we think Sing is a must-see.
A delightful family movie with a whole lot of soul that is sure to make your heart ‘sing’.
