The St Kilda playground has been going through a huge redevelopment over the past year. Here is an update from the City of Salisbury’s Facebook Page on 1 August 2015:
A new kingdom is being established at St Kilda!
Preliminary works are now underway to build a 14-metre tall Castle at the St Kilda Playground – which is more than double the height of the existing Castle!
The Castle will feature both internal and external slides, fire poles, soft fall rubber and a drawbridge.
It will be built from materials specifically chosen to reduce heat in summer and withstand the coastal environment, and is cladded in Securemax galvanised mesh which gives a 360 degree view from within the structure.
The works are expected to be complete by October and make-up Stage 3 of the $3.55 million St Kilda Playground Renewal.
The remainder of the playground will be open to the public while these works occur, including the bouncy boomerang, pirate ship, submarine, basketball court, swings, barbecue area and flying fox.
Stage 1 of the $3.5 million St Kilda Playground Renewal Project was completed in March, and features:
• A new basketball court
• New swings and soft-fall sands
• Improved landscaping such as garden beds and turf
• A drinking fountain to quench your thirst on hot summer days and
• New electric barbecues and park furniture
Stage 2 is just weeks away from completion and involves a significant upgrade to the Volcano attraction including new lava slides, bridges and stairs. We expect the upgraded Volcano to open to the public in mid-August.
If you are planning a visit to St Kilda why not make a day of it and check out some of the local businesses and major attractions such as the Tram Museum, beautiful Mangrove Trails and quality boating facilities.
Important note if you are visiting: Mosquitoes are quite prevalent along the coastal environments including areas around St Kilda. So please cover up or use repellent if needed.
