St Peters Bakehouse is a family owned Adelaide business synonymous with quality baked goods. Whilst all three locations offer great tasting food, including the original bakery in St Peters, the Ridgehaven store is also conveniently positioned in front of a lovely nature themed playground, Ridgehaven Reserve.

The first time I visited St Peters Bakehouse at Ridgehaven I was invited by a mum friend that lives just down the road. She lured me in with the promise of strong coffee, carbohydrates and a playground with enough equipment to occupy three small children for long enough for us to hold a short conversation. She delivered on her promise and two years later this bakery playground combo is still high on my rotation.

Stepping foot inside the bakery it’s surprising to see how spacious it is. There is a huge cabinet display filled with sandwiches, quiches, pies and pasties and an incredibly tempting array of sweet treats. There is also a La Marzocco machine behind the counter to pump out quality coffee using Piazza D’Oro beans. There are tables to accommodate big and small groups and the area feels inviting, homely and a little bit fun.

From a design perspective there is one wall with floor to ceiling pressed metal, one wall with exposed red brick and an eye catching mosaic tile that features on the front cabinet and the wall of the drinks fridge. To sum it up it’s a nice place to grab a quick meal but equally pleasant for longer catch ups. Despite being a bakery there are gluten free items available on site and a range of food choices for vegetarian diners too.

Once you have filled up your stomach and had your coffee fix if you head outside, turn right and follow the path you will find yourself at Ridgehaven Reserve. This playground isn’t huge but it has enough equipment for the kids to burn off some energy and it’s a lovely spot next to a creek, surrounded by trees.  There are two slides for small children with sturdy stable steps easy enough for them to climb. There is also a small window for children to enjoy some imaginative play using the bark chip ground cover as food items. There is a large swing to accommodate a few children at a time, some wooden stepping stones, monkey bars and some climbing nets for bigger kids to enjoy.

If you prefer to take your bakery treats to the park and dine alfresco there is a table and bench seats next to the playground. There are also no toilets at this park but if you are a patron of St Peters Bakehouse you can use their facilities including their baby change table.

What I love about this bakery playground combo is that the playground is tucked away so it feels like a bit of a hidden gem that doesn’t normally get too busy. It is also a perfect option when you want to get out of the house for a bit but don’t want to go anywhere super expensive, crazy or overwhelming.

So if you find yourself this side of town and are looking for somewhere to eat, play and caffeinate, definitely put St Peters Bakehouse and Ridgehaven Reserve on your hit list.

Things to consider

  • The playground isn’t shaded so make sure you slip, slop, slap
  • There is car parking out the front of the bakery but during peak times it does get busy so be aware of this
  • Even though the bakery provided gluten free options they are contained in a cabinet with other gluten containing products so may not be appropriate for individuals with celiac disease
