If you’re a football family you’ll understand the joy kids get when they watch their sporting idols play live. Taking kids to the footy is a great family-friendly experience that all ages can enjoy. AFL is South Australia’s favourite code and with two teams in the national competition there’s plenty of opportunity to catch a game. Football in South Australia has a long and colourful history with the first official record of Australian Rules being played in SA dating back to 1843.
Teams
The Adelaide Football Club, known as the Adelaide Crows, were South Australia’s first team into the AFL. They have a comprehensive website you can find here, and children can sign up as a Crows eKid for free allowing them to support their club of choice and receive numerous free benefits.
Port Adelaide Football Club has a long history, playing their first game way back in 1870. In 1997 the club joined the AFL with their national team – Port Power (visit their website here) and added teal and silver to their traditional colours of black and white. Planet Teal is for children aged 5-12 years and includes a range of fun and interactive programs including the Planet Teal Zone at Power home games. You can find out more about Planet Teal here.
AFL matches are currently played at AAMI Stadium, located at West Lakes, with a move to Adelaide Oval planned for 2014. You can make the most of your day out with the kids at AAMI Stadium by familiarising yourself with the stadium’s family facilities listed on their website. There are numerous baby change facilities around the Stadium and you can bring a pram or stroller, but they are not permitted within the seating bays due to safety reasons. There is often a ‘Be Active’ Kick n Catch at the end of matches so bring along a footy. The schedule will tell you at which games this activity takes place.
Included in most AFL event tickets is the cost of bus transport to and from AAMI Stadium via the SA Lotteries Footy Express Service. You can check Adelaide Metro timetables here, or alternatively call Adelaide Metro on 1300 311 108 for timetable information. If you choose to drive, car parking space is available around the Stadium and in the Westfield Shopping Centre.
