The Lyndoch Motel | Barossa Valley | Review

Lyndoch motel

If you like pretty as a button retro motels and old-fashioned family fun, you need to check out the Lyndoch Motel.

Review by Angelica-Hazel Toutounji

Located in the picturesque town of Lyndoch in the Southern Barossa Valley, the Lyndoch Motel is a renovated retro gem of a motel that is fun, functional and very well set up for families.

Pulling in off the main road, you drive through an extensive garden area before coming face to face with the main reception area. Before driving through to collect your keys you can’t help but notice a neon Lyndoch motel sign and a retro love bug car positioned right next door. Moving into the reception area, an old-fashioned phone caught the kids’ attention, and they played games with it whilst the friendly staff checked us in.

Driving past the reception and making our way to the room, the kids got excited seeing the rows of white motel rooms with pretty painted doors. We stayed for a cousin’s escape and booked two interconnecting rooms, one with a queen and one with a single bed. Each room was decked out with cute retro features, a small balcony and enough distance between rooms that the interconnecting door was a fun novelty, not an annoyance. During our stay, we also checked out their family room, which offers a two-bedroom unit with a queen and couch in one room and two single beds in the other. All of the rooms were spacious, in a retro theme, and the family room even offered a small selection of Dr Seuss books, which was a sweet touch!

Motel rooms aside, the main reason for our stay was to enjoy some summer sunshine in their on-site pool. The pool is oval-shaped and features deck chairs, yellow umbrellas, a smaller dedicated kids’ pool, and BBQs and picnic tables close by. The kids spent hours splashing about, enjoying the pool noodles and sinky toys; it was hard to drag them away for dinner.

There is an on-site Italian restaurant called Edo Cucina, and platters and breakfast packs are also available for purchase. Alternatively, nearby is a beautiful winery and restaurant, 1837. They offer amazing meals for kids and adults, and we were lucky enough to catch the sunset over the vines.

After an afternoon of water play and a lovely meal, we made our way back to the room for a family movie night. Each room offers a television and the ability to connect to Stan, Disney and Netflix, so there are lots of entertainment options on offer.

Another feature we noticed at the motel is an awesome function space that would be great for families and groups. There is a dedicated indoor space, an undercover area outside, and a table and chairs under fairy lights. The property is also surrounded by lovely gardens and is right next door to the old Barossa Chateau, which offers high tea, Devonshire tea and rose gardens.

Our overnight stay was short but sweet and the perfect little refresh for a family. We often stay in caravan parks or hotels, so the motel’s retro theme brought a sense of fun for the kids and nostalgia for the adults. If you have visited the Barossa before but haven’t spent the night in Lyndoch, this is your sign to give it a go. The township oozes country charm and offers a bunch of wineries, small shops, an art trail and even a small Lavender farm.

So if you are looking for a unique family stay for a little getaway, give the Lyndoch Motel a try. Our family had a great time making memories, and the kids still talk about the experience weeks later!

What we like about

  • The cute retro theme and the pool
  • The Lyndoch Motel is a newly-renovated motel with kind staff, cute facilities, retro charm and clean rooms.

Coffee and food options nearby

  • Highly recommend 1837 for a meal, their kids’ meals were decent in size, and the adults’ meals were delicious too. This place is a little bit fancy, so we brought colouring in and activities for the kids
