TIMELIGHT: Beyond Our Ticking World | Review
Timelight at ILA Adelaide is a captivating, immersive digital art experience that invites all ages to interact with light and colour, while contemplating and questioning the concept of time itself.
Timelight is not your typical art exhibition. Created by artists who have also become technologists, it’s a work of ingenuity that blends creativity with cutting-edge digital design. Hosted at ILA – one of the only places in Australia showcasing this kind of multisensory digital experience, it’s worth pausing to appreciate how unique this opportunity is before you step inside.
IS TIMELIGHT SUITABLE FOR KIDS?
Absolutely! While there’s lots to think about emerging from the concept of time, it’s quite whimsical, fun and interactive. Kids will love touching the screen and watching as patterns of colour and shape emerge. This is a unique experience that’s hard to find anywhere in Australia and tickets for kids aged 0 – 2 are FREE entry, kids aged 2 -4 are $10.
It is quite dark inside until colour emerges from the screen and it may be worth reassuring them, if they’re worried about being in the dark. There is also accompanying music and narration, however, it’s not loud or overwhelming.

TIMELIGHT IS AN INTERACTIVE DIGITAL ART EXHIBITION
The exhibition is captivating and mesmerising, with stunning visuals that respond to your fingertips on giant touch screens that fill the sides of the room. You’re not just looking at art; you’re creating and contributing to it. Patterns of light and colour shift in real time, drawing you into a truly interactive space that feels like stepping into another dimension. It’s immersive, engaging, and suitable for all ages.
Inside, the work itself asks you to consider time not as something finite, but as fluid, tied to our planet and its evolving timeline. Outside, a large whiteboard invites you to write down what time means to you, extending the conversation beyond the gallery walls.

You could simply enjoy the stunning visuals and sensory beauty, but I encourage you to fully immerse yourself. If you’re a philosopher at heart, you’ll find endless layers to unpack.
TIMELIGHT reminds us that art isn’t just something to look at, it’s something to question. It challenges how we see life, encouraging us to interpret not only through our own lens but also through the perspectives of others. It invites us to deepen our understanding of the world and its people, and to be awestruck by the wonder of art itself.

A thought-provoking, playful experience and a brilliant choice for the spring school holidays for families.
TIMELIGHT opens on Friday 26 September and runs at ILA until 26 October 2025.
