The Tramway Museum | St Kilda | Review
Take a ride into history and go and explore Adelaide’s Tramway Museum at St Kilda.

If you have transport loving little tuckers, an often overlooked yet much loved Adelaide attraction is the Tramway Museum. Located in the northern Adelaide suburb of St Kilda and open every Sunday afternoon, the museum is incredibly well preserved, educational and fun for young and old. Plus, the best part is that your entry fee not only allows you to peak inside and explore the old trams, it also provides unlimited rides between the museum and nearby St Kilda Adventure Playground.

When entering the museum, you are met with a book and souvenir shop where you can look at some small displays and purchase cool drinks or ice cream. Then once inside the museum there are a few trams outside on display and three large museum sheds with electric trams, trolley buses and horse drawn trams.
There are signs, photographs and opportunities to learn and interact dotted throughout these sheds. The most enjoyable part for my children was being able to physically jump on the trams and walk through, ringing the bells and pretending to be the tram driver.

Once you have taken the time to get up close and personal with all of the trams you can board the operating tram and make your way to the St Kilda Adventure Playground. The trams run every half an hour and it takes ten minutes on the tram from the museum to the playground. The journey is interesting as you pass a lot of salt marsh and there can be quite a lot of birds to see.

On the day we visited it was quite busy and there was excitement in the air as the museum commissioned a historic H type tram. We were lucky enough to watch the tram make its way out of the shed and tear through the celebratory ribbon for the big celebration.
We visited with a four-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl, both children really enjoyed the museum and got a kick out of riding on the tram. I recommend hitting up the tram museum first, taking some snacks or a picnic lunch and then spending the rest of the afternoon at the playground before returning back on the tram.

Things to consider
- Wheelchair ramps are at each end of the tram line
- Toilets are available on site
- There is ample car parking
- Part of the museum is outdoors so it is recommended to take a hat and wear closed shoes
- St Kilda Mangrove Trail is also nearby
Location:
300-360 St Kilda Rd, St Kilda
