Uraidla & Summertown Country Show & Sustainability Fair Review
Now in its 129th year, the Uraidla and Summertown Country Show continues to get bigger and better every year. The Uraidla show has all the charm of a country show with a lot of fun things to do and great things to see, taste, drink and buy.
With an entry fee of just $5 for adults and free for kids under 12 years, this makes for a really affordable and fun day out for everyone and the show does a great job of catering for all interests.
Country Tradition
The show is set around the Uraidla Oval and features traditional country show favourites such as sheep herding, poultry, fresh produce and log chopping and a CWA stall with baked goods.
In the old stone building there are competitions where locals compete with baking, preserves, flowers, fruits and vegetables. This area is renowned for top-quality produce so the competition is stiff.
Kids Entertainment
This year there were plenty of rides to keep the kids amused with a sideshow alley featuring a huge bouncy castle with slide, water cylinder bubbles, dragon ride plus several amusement rides. There was something to cater for little people right up to young teenagers.
For the adventurous kids, there was even a huge digger to climb up on and they had a ball!
Food and Drink
The huge crowds appeared to be no problem for catering as there were food stalls and food trucks aplenty this year offering favourite snacks like fairy floss, hot donuts and chips to gourmet food trucks offering pasta and yiros and gourmet ice-blocks. We couldn’t resist the Loca-Pop Ice Blocks and bottles of amazingly sweet, freshly-pressed apple juice.
There was also plenty of wine-tasting available from numerous local wineries – and gin by the glass too.
Other Entertainment
The main stage played host to everything from cherry spitting competitions to music, while on the oval one of the highlights with the crowd was the trebuchet which required a lot of human power to catapult the watermelons high up into the air. The watermelons smashed onto the oval and after the fun was over, in true country style, the kids ran onto the the oval to collect pieces of watermelon to eat!
Stalls
This year there were a lot of stalls with everything from trinkets, old tools and fresh produce to crafts and plants.
Special Displays
Being a country show, there were heritage cars on display and farm machinery plus the local CFS crews were on-hand with their trucks.
Sustainability Fair
The sustainability fair showcases a range of products for sale and stalls with information on recycling, sustainable living and sustainable gardening.
Located in the grounds of the Uraidla Primary School there were recycled crafts, native plants, solar technology stalls and organic food stalls. This was a great spot for the kids to play on the school playground while parents browsed the nearby stalls and listened to talks from guest speakers like gardening guru Sophie Thompson.
Many families enjoyed the activities during the day and took tired but happy children home for dinner while the younger crowd moved in to celebrate.
At 9pm, families returned and congregated under the safety of the grandstand to enjoy a spectacular, close-up fireworks display. It’s not very often you can get up this close to fireworks.
What we love about the Uraidla Show:
❤️ This year, there was parking in one of the paddocks just a short walk down the road – great for tired little legs.
❤️ Entry is great value!
❤️ This show has such a lovely feel about it – it’s very welcoming for families, but there really is something for everyone.
❤️ There were lots of different sideshow rides for kids to choose from.
❤️ Food & wine – and plenty of it too!
❤️ Although there were record-breaking crowds this year, the show still had such a relaxed atmosphere and there were plenty of shady places to sit and sip a glass of wine while watching the kids play – a great day out!
