Valley Lake Playground in Mt Gambier
Review by Claire Davill
This playground in the Valley Lakes recreation area in Mt Gambier has everything – fully fenced, shaded, toilets nearby, barbeques and picnic shelters, and a huge variety of play equipment including a lot of accessible features.
Valley Lake is a crater lake near the famous Blue Lake in Mount Gambier, and is surrounded by parks, a conservation reserve, disc golf course and steep forested hillsides. There’s plenty to see and do here, and the playground is a highlight. It’s one of the biggest fully-fenced playgrounds we’ve seen, and has lots of equipment to suit kids of all ages and abilities.
The steep hillsides on all sides, as well as the numerous big trees, means the playground is almost always shady and cool. There’s plenty of parking and a toilet block not far away.
The playground boasts an impressive amount of fully accessible equipment, including a liberty swing and ramps onto many of the equipment platforms.
A large sand play area is suitable for small children and includes diggers, scoops, funnels, and a conveyor belt. There is a small slide and castle-themed equipment here too.
The nearby seesaw swing is lots of fun for older kids, especially when a few kids play together.
This shaded area also has equipment suitable for toddlers, with small slides, tunnels and low platforms. There are low rope stepping stones and springy animals to ride on as well.
A more open area contains a large variety of nautical-themed equipment suitable for toddlers and slightly older children, with a springy dolphin, pelican and boat. There’s lots of climbing nets, a bridge, fireman’s pole and gentle slide.
Another collection of equipment includes tic-tac-toe, a tube slide, rock climbing wall, regular slide and access ramps.
For more adventurous kids, there’s a great big climbing net, rope bridge and slide. This area isn’t shaded, but only gets direct sunlight in the middle of the day.
Under the nearby tree is a basket swing and a jump-swing around pole that will be a challenge to all but very tall children.
Head up the slope to the outback themed equipment with a slide, rock climbing wall, water tank cubby, shearing corral and play store. This area is suited to slightly older kids.
Nearby is a mountain-themed piece of equipment with a large climbing net, rope net, climbing wall, jump challenge and rotating bar that ninja warrior fans will love. Definitely suited to older kids!
Older kids and adults will also love the exercise/gym/obstacle course equipment here. Chin-up bars, sit-up platforms, climbing net, steps and an incline rope pull will get those muscles working.
There is a fun maze here with activity panels throughout the maze.
There are plenty of picnic tables throughout the whole playground, and two large shelters with tables and barbeques.
There is plenty here to keep the kids occupied for a long time, and is worth a stop if you are passing through Mount Gambier.
