Walkerville Library | Review
Visiting the local library with kids is a great way to foster their love of reading at an early age. Not only are libraries a great low cost activity, they are cool in summer, warm in winter and offer a variety of toys, activities and community events. The Walkerville library is no exception and a great pit stop for families visiting or living in the area.

Taking pride of place on Walkerville terrace, sits the multipurpose civic and community centre, town hall, council chambers and public library. This centre is an incredible blend of old meets new with the town hall opening in June 1893 and the adjacent library and civic centre refurbished, rebuilt and officially opened in 2014.

The library itself is a lovely place for children as it has enough books, toys and activities to keep things interesting but not too much to be overwhelming. The kids zone sits on the right hand side when you walk in and features a comfortable orange sofa, a small table and chairs for colouring in, a play kitchen, seating by the floor to ceiling window and of course books for all ages. Walkerville Library also offers a digital library services with access to Kanopy Kids, a great resource with educational and engaging children’s videos.

The Walkerville library offers fantastic events throughout the year for old and young including a lego club, movie screenings, science squad and their very popular Wiggle, Giggle, Bubbles an interactive weekly session for for the first three years of development. You can find out more about their events through signing up the the council e-news, exploring the website or visiting the library. There is a huge display of upcoming events inside the civic centre and the staff are fantastic if you have questions.

The town of Walkerville also recently opened a new recreation centre and because of this their events are now spread out between the town hall, library and the new recreation centre on Smith street. To be kept abreast of the latest events and activities, it’s worth checking out the Walkerville Recreation Centre website too, especially for more physically active events such as Wallaby workout!

So the next time you find yourself close to the city with your children and in the lovely leafy neighbourhood of Walkerville, make sure you give their library a visit, attend an event or check out the new recreation centre. They offer a lovely space, great facilities and well thought out events that the whole family will enjoy.

What we like about it:
- That it is housed in a lovely building that is a mix of old meets new
- The kids zone with a great selection of toys, books and a nice space to sit down
- Great community events throughout the year for adults and kids
- Set on the tree lined street of Walkerville Terrace, it’s in a lovely spot, close to coffee shops, a supermarket and the Walkerville Oval playground
Things to consider:
- Events can book out quickly so keep an eye on what they have to offer
- There is no toy library on site
- Some activities and events are located at the new recreation centre so its good to look at their schedule as well as the library schedule to get the best understanding of what’s on offer
Coffee and food options nearby
- The Coffee institute is a few minutes walk down the street for good coffee and food
