World Giraffe Day shines a spotlight on the silent extinction giraffes are facing. Sadly, there are approximately 117,000 giraffes left in the wild, and the species is listed as Vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN Red List.
Zoos SA is helping giraffe conservation stand tall, with a successful giraffe breeding program at Monarto Safari Park and by supporting vital efforts in Africa through the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.
Join in celebrating the bold and beautiful giraffe at Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Safari Park on Saturday 21 June 2025 with a day of giraffe-themed fun:
- Special Giraffe Keeper Talk
- Giraffe finger-puppets and temporary tattoos
- Limited edition giraffe tote bags (for purchase at retail stores- while stock lasts.)
- Spotty-ccinos and Giraffe sweet treats (for purchase at the cafe.)
Did you know Monarto Safari Park has the largest herd of giraffes in Australia? These leggy legends can run as fast as 50 kilometres per hour and only need between 5-30 minutes of sleep per day. They have a bluish-purple tongue that’s between 45-50 centimetres long as you can see in our photos below!
