Wynn Vale Dam and Playground | Review
Wynn Vale Dam and Playground – a playground that little kids will love, and bird life aplenty.
Review by Claire Davill
Wynn Vale Dam has had a spruce up, with an upgraded playground, excellent walking paths and boardwalks around the dam, and informative signs along the way. There are so many water birds here, including a lot of ibis, cormorants, ducks, geese, coots and moor hens.
The playground sits near the northern end of the dam, accessible from De Pledge Court or Shearwater Place. The main playground is fully shaded and contains playground equipment that’s perfectly sized for smaller kids.

There are two small slides, climbing nets, a small bridge and activity boards, including an excellent “connect 4” board.

There is also a small rotating climbing net and platform, toddler swing, regular swing and basket swing in the shaded area.

There’s a brilliant four wheel drive-style springy car as well, and a small springy seesaw. A soft fall crocodile and stepping stones are also fun additions.

Nearby there is a challenging wood and rope climbing apparatus, and some stepping logs.

Over the footpath you’ll find a great sandpit that is absolutely filled with toys to play with. There’s also a play boat surrounded by blue soft fall here.

A nature play cubby house frame has already had plenty of sticks and branches added to it, and a little pretend fireplace built inside.

There’s a picnic shelter and drinking fountain. From here it’s a short walk to the dam, where you can do a loop around the whole dam. The paths here are mostly flat and well sealed, making them ideal for prams, wheelchairs and small bikes. We suggest heading left from the playground and making a clockwise loop around the dam. Keep an eye out for the information signs along the path.

You’ll pass by the historic Elder Green Farm, where if you’re lucky you’ll spot a couple of horses. Further along the path is a boardwalk that heads out over the water, which is a great spot to look for water birds.

Turn right and walk along the dam wall at the southern end. There is a toilet block just below the dam wall, this is the closest toilet to the playground.

As you head back north towards the playground you’ll see a great place to view Shearwater Island, where lots of Ibis are nesting. They’re quite loud!

Things to Consider:
- The playground, and the dam are not fenced. Keep a close eye on little ones.
- The toilet is quite far from the playground, about 500 metres. There is a carpark just off of Park Lake Drive that is closer to the toilet and the path circling the dam.
- Most of the play equipment is designed for smaller children, but older children will still find some equipment that suits them.
- There are lots of dead-end roads surrounding the dam, so driving to the playground is not straight forward. If you want to park near the playground you will need to approach from the north, from Surrey Farm Drive.
Our favourite nearby coffee spots/cafes:
- The Grove Shopping Centre is a four minute drive away, with plenty of cafes and eateries.
Location:
Wynn Vale Dam/Shearwater Park, De Pledge Ct, Wynn Vale.
Other access points include Shearwater Place, Park Lake Drive, and Shelduck Ct.
