Kimba Playground | Eyre Peninsula | South Australia | Review

Kimba playground – is this the best playground on the Eyre Peninsula? We think so!

by Katrina Gogel

After hearing great things about the newly upgraded, all-abilities playground in Kimba, we made sure to put it on our โ€˜must-seeโ€™ list when travelling the Eyre Peninsula recently.

And it did not disappoint!

The scale of this rural playground is impressive and its fantastic upgrade is a credit to the Kimba community and council. After winning a Fund My Neighbourhood grant in 2018, they worked tirelessly together to create this all-inclusive play space for the many young families who reside in town, as well as keeping visitors in mind too.

Set under three large sails the playground is completely shaded, has numerous kid-friendly surfaces (including soft-fall rubber, bark and sand) and is fully fenced.

There is an abundance of well-maintained traditional play equipment suitable for all ages- including swing sets, slides, a basket swing, tunnels, ramps, rockers and bridges.

There is also a fabulous toddler and baby swing, and a fun ambulance on springs, which gently moves up and down and to the side when rocked by children or adults.

Some modern pieces have been added in the recent upgrade, including musical play equipment and a wheelchair accessible roundabout. This section of play equipment is built on a smooth, soft-fall surface, making it easy for wheelchairs to access via the surrounding paved paths.

The standout feature of this playground though has to be the brand new, full-size jumping pillow. Yes, you read that right, this public play space boasts a jumping pillow (here we were thinking these were exclusive to caravan parks only!). Itโ€™s a wonderful addition to this already great playground, and something the kids will rave about.

Our two youngsters love a jumping pillow, so between that and all the play equipment they were happily entertained for two hours.

The enclosed playground has been thoughtfully finished with two small grassed areas, and picnic tables under shade sails. A large, off-street car park runs along the perimeter, and there are public toilets and BBQ facilities located next door in the Apex Lions park.

Kimba is well known for its beautiful silo art and for being the halfway point across Australia, but we think this excellent playground is a tourist attraction in itself. Be sure to put it on your Eyre Peninsula travel itinerary!

What we like about Kimba playground

  • The jumping pillow! We have never come across a jumping pillow in a public playground before, so this was super exciting!
  • The extensive range of play equipment on offer
  • Wheelchair accessible
  • Fully fenced
  • Huge shade sails make playing on a warm, sunny day safe and comfortable

Facilities

  • Large off-street car park
  • Public toilets
  • Rubbish bins
  • Water fountain
  • Shaded picnic tables
  • BBQ area located right next door in the Lions Apex park area

Things to see and do in Kimba

  • Kimba silo art โ€“ a must-see during the day and at night (if you are staying in the town)
  • Town murals. We particularly loved the big, beautiful mural located in the recreation grounds
  • Donโ€™t forget a photo with the Halfway across Australia sign and the big galah!
  • Wander down the main street and visit some of the local shops and cafes. We loved Eileenโ€™s cafรฉ (kid friendly) and also had a wonderful time looking around the fabulous Workshop 26.
  • If camping, we recommend a stopover at the excellent free camp in town. Kimba Recreation Reserve has a free camping designated area featuring toilets, coin operated shower, water, small playground, oval, courts, it is pet friendly and the Roora Reserve walking trail is near by. Power is not available. Donation boxes are located at the amenities block, and we urge people who camp here to leave a small donation so wonderful campsites like these remain open!
