Wigley Reserve Playground Glenelg | Review

Glenelg’s Wigley Reserve new $1 million adventure playspace and fitness hub has been officially opened on 31 October 2020 by the City of Holdfast Bay.

The brand new playground sits in the north-western corner of Wigley Reserve – just look out for the huge custom-built white shade structure that soars above it.

The previous plastic based playground has been replaced with equipment created predominantly with natural materials including tree stumps, logs and ropes, plus metal. Most of the playground sits on soft fall surface with some areas having bark chips.

It includes a large climbing tunnel structure accessible by steps on one end and netting at the other end with a big metal tube slide as well as small slide for little ones.

There are two small round in-ground trampolines, swings, spinners and a small spinning roundabout.

Nature inspired elements include a log climbing structure, stepping boulders and a giant rope swing which can seat a few kids together.

Other facilities include toilets (right next to the playground), BBQs, a shaded picnic table, drinking fountain, bike racks, seating and landscaping.

Adjacent to the playground is an impressive fitness hub with 10 new stations.

Things to Note:

Please note that the playground is only partially fenced – it is not fully fenced (unlike the previous one) so be aware if you have young kids or a ‘runner’, as the playground sits right near the waters of the Patawalonga.

There is good visibility for supervision, with the tunnel being visible right through so you can keep an eye on your kids.

The reserve features a large grass area great for ball sports or picnics and makes the playground a good distance from the road.

The large-scale playspace and fitness hub plan was created by JPE Design Studio, using community feedback collected during two stages of consultation in 2018 and early 2019. The City of Holdfast Council committed $500,000 towards the project and the other $500,000 was supported through the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure’s 2020/2021 Open Space and Places for People Grant Program.

There are plenty of eateries, cafes and restaurants nearby on Jetty Road. Moseley Square is at the end of Jetty Road where there are free water play fountains and the Glenelg Foreshore Playground is on the beachfront. Also around the corner on Colley Terrace is The Beachouse amusement centre.
