Explore a range of programs for babies, toddlers, children and teens at your local council library
South Australia’s local council libraries have cosy corners for quiet reading and an ever-changing range of books, magazines and DVD’s to explore across the One-Card system. They also provide wonderful, safe spaces for families and children of all ages to gather, make some noise and connect through a great range of programs.
Many council libraries also offer spacious and modern meeting rooms, kids zones with a range of books, toys and computers for kids to use. Some council libraries even offer outdoor seating areas and cafes.
Programs for Babies and Parents
Council libraries offer fun and interactive nursery rhyme time for parents with babies and toddlers up to 2 years. These sessions are a lovely way for parents to bond with their children and also get to know other parents. Sessions usually incorporate nursery rhymes, action songs and percussion instruments.
Preschool Story Time
The ancient art of storytelling continues weekly in council libraries all around SA with Story Time for children aged 2-5 years. These sessions are usually free and bookings are generally not necessary.
Reading to children from the day they are born is still the greatest way to shape future literacy and development in children. These 30-45 minute sessions may include stories, songs, craft and rhymes.
Attending a storytime session at the library is a great way to make friends and start a life-long love of reading in little ones that will benefit them for their whole life.
After School Council Library Activities for Children
Your local council library may offer:
- STEM programs for kids who want to learn more about science, technology, engineering and maths.
- Sustainable Green Groups for kids who want to learn about the environment, be involved in sustainable activities and enjoy excursions.
- Children’s University
- Little Big Bang Discovery Science Club online
- Lego Club
- Chess Club
- Creative Literacy Groups – public speaking, writing, drama
Council Library Activities for Teens
For kids who catch the bus or may wait for their parents to collect them, your local library offers a safe place for them to meet with friends and join a workshop.
Your local council library may offer:
- Animation Workshops
- Writing Groups for teens who love writing. A great way for them to encourage each other in their passion for creating stories.
- Anime Clubs for teenagers who love anime and manga.
Online Resources and Groups for Children & Teens
South Australian council libraries also offer a range of online activities and resources for kids of all ages:
