Magic Beach | CDP Kids | DreamBIG Children’s Festival | Review

Pack your bags for a road trip to the “Magic Beach”

Review by Sharon Harrington | May 29, 2021

Have you ever felt nostalgic for an era of your life before it has even passed? That is the idea behind this evocative stage show, inspired by Alison Lester’s much-loved children’s book, Magic Beach.

A family of five sets off on their annual, weeklong summer holiday to their “Magic Beach”. We can tell this is going to be the classic family trip, full of silly towel fights, dodgy dad jokes, long hours of fishing without catching any fish and loads of fun in the sand and waves. But one member of the family has turned eleven and has the sinking feeling she is too old for all this now, as she is almost a teenager after all! Her little brother and sister have a sense of her slipping away from them, but carry on with their joyous, imaginative games hoping that maybe she will join them for one more year of fun before she joins the other teenagers on their mysterious walks and secret conversations.

The wonderfully childlike actors bring to life what it is to be a child on a beach holiday. They squabble incessantly with their siblings at the same time as having the time of their lives with them, become best buds with a random child at the rock pool, and create adventures in the sea where white-capped waves become thundering wild horses, king tides become ferocious dragons and the jetty becomes a pirate ship on the high seas!

My daughters’ little faces were lit up with enjoyment during this show, their favourite parts being the rhymes and songs. I liked the feeling of being on a summer holiday and the reminder that the fun times now will live on in our memories even as the children change and grow up.

This charming production will make you want to head straight out to your own Magic Beach to create some family fun and memories!
