Payneham Community Centre Playground Review
By Claire Davill
Tucked away behind the Payneham Community Centre building is a little playground that ticks all the boxes for toddler play. Fully fenced, fully shaded, toilets, picnic shelter and ample parking – and lots of equipment just right for little kids.
The Payneham Community Centre building sits on the corner of Payneham Road and Arthur Street, and hides a park and fully fenced playground behind it. Parking is available from Arthur Street, or from Payneham Road – drive down between the Community Centre and the RSL and you’ll find a large carpark at the end of a long driveway.
This playground is perfect for toddlers and small children. All the equipment is scaled-down, and there is lots to keep kids occupied. There are small climbing walls, a colourful spinning flower window and a bridge, and hanging stepping stones.
Two small slides provide a smooth or bumpy ride – the choice is yours.
Underneath the main platform is a great little spinning letter board, for making an endless range of three letter words – something you don’t usually see in playgrounds! This has the potential to keep slightly older kids occupied while the younger ones challenge themselves on the equipment.
A springy bike and two small swings are set apart from the main equipment, but are still under the shade sails. There are also park benches and large seating platforms within the fenced area.
Outside of the fenced area is a picnic shelter with barbeques and picnic table, lots of lawn and a large, clean toilet block. The toilet block is locked after dusk.
Just outside the fenced area is a gorgeous mosaic table and chairs, with a snake “board game” on the table. Bring dice and counters with you and race your way around the snake while having a picnic.
Location:
Corner of Payneham Road and Arthur Street, Payneham
Note: If you are approaching from Payneham Road, you can only turn left into Arthur Street or the car park as you are travelling west along Payneham Road. The entrance to the car park is immediately after the Community Centre Building and before the Payneham RSL building.
A further 500 metres up Payneham Road is the Marden shopping centre, with cafes, restaurants and a supermarket.
