Six Extinctions | SA Museum Dinosaur Exhibition | Review

If you have a budding paleontologist in the family, or dinosaur-mad kids, then you need to check out the latest exhibition at the South Australian Museum.

Six Extinctions showcases an amazing collection of fossils, life-like models, and large artworks, and also features never before seen specimens from the SA Museum’s own collection, including a recently identified Ankylosaurus skull (an armoured dinosaur that lived more than 60 million years ago), meteorites from the largest found strewn area since 1969 and examples of extinct species from Australia that illustrate the devastating effects of climate change.

The exhibition provides information on each of the major extinction events and features an example of a top predator from each time period, including several impressive skeletons and life-size models. The major drawcard though, is the huge Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton – the kids will love it!

Another feature of the exhibition that is a big hit with the kids are the vibrating platforms – kids (and adults) are encouraged to walk across the platforms to feel the earth shake as if there is a large dinosaur walking nearby. Think “cup of water vibrating” from the original Jurassic Park movie, but feeling it through your feet!

The exhibition guides you through five major extinction events and then invites you to ponder the possibility of a sixth – caused by humans. There is a thought provoking video with narration by David Attenborough to watch and you should definitely sit down and view this before leaving the exhibition.

Throughout the exhibition are screens featuring a cute cartoon tardigrade. This is a creature that has survived all five extinction events. There is engaging animation explaining how the tardigrade has survived changes to the environment, and you can scan a QR code on each screen to learn more. You’ll also receive your own tardigrade sticker at the ticket desk.

Things to consider:

  • This is a paid exhibition, that dinosaur-loving kids will really enjoy.
  • Allow up to an hour to explore everything in the exhibit
  • Older kids will appreciate the excellently presented information about extinction events, but younger kids will still enjoy all the skeletons and models, and the vibrating plates.
  • There are some sensory warnings for this exhibit, with some strobe lighting and repetitive sounds and the optional vibrating plates, but we found these to be pretty mild.
  • Don’t forget to pick up your tardigrade stickers upon entry!
