Soweto Gospel Choir – Hope: Adelaide Fringe 2023 Review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars for uplifting harmonies that fill your soul.
Review by Claire Davill
As the choir master points out at the start of the show, you might not understand the language, but you will understand the feeling.
Soweto Gospel Choir’s rich harmonies reverberate around the open air venue, filling the audience with hope and awe. With only drums and occasional keyboard as accompaniments, the choir relies on powerful voices from every member to create an uplifting show of songs from the South African freedom movement to Civil Rights era protest songs.
There is no filler in this show – each song leads quickly into the next, with solo performances from almost every member. The performers are brightly attired, celebrating their music through movement as much as their voices, and displaying a level of emotion that is quickly reflected in the crowd.
A well-deserved standing ovation led to a wonderful rendition of Hallelujah, with the audience encouraged to sing along. A perfect end to the performance.
