Hutchinson Park Playground in Norwood

Tucked away down a quiet little side street, not far from The Parade, is a beautiful hidden park with a playground that packs a punch.
Hutchinson Park occupies the centre of a block in Norwood and can be accessed via Free Street or Bond Street. First Creek cuts through the reserve, and there’s a bridge, shaded playground, beautiful old gum trees and a wombat statue.
Lots of lush lawn and shade, stepping stones and a (mostly) dry creek to explore, this park is a lovely place to visit. The playground is small, but has plenty to offer, especially for kids that like climbing.
Large shade sails cover the two main pieces of equipment, there are a couple of climbing walls, climbing nets (one a spider web design), ladders, climbing stepping stones, fireman’s pole and a slide.
The equipment is a little too big for toddlers, but perfect for small kids and big kids alike. There are lots of benches surrounding the playground for parents to sit and watch.
The playground area also features two swings, one with a toddler seat, and a springy seesaw.
There is a large bridge over the creek to access the playground, but the creek itself is worth exploring. It rarely has water in it, but has lots of rocks to climb on and pebbles to stack.
The whimsical wombat statue sits across the creek from the playground, under the shade of the large gum trees.
Things to consider:
- This is an unfenced park, but there is very little traffic nearby. Most of the park is bordered by the back fences of the surrounding properties, and the two access streets are very quiet. The playground is across the creek from the road access points, which helps contain potential runners.
- Being a small local park for residents, parking is limited. There is room for a few cars on both Free Street and Bond Street, and plenty of parking on Sydenham Road nearby.
- The park has a picnic table, rubbish bins and drinking fountain, but no toilets. There are numerous cafes on The Parade a block and a half away.
