The Flying Canoe – DreamBig Children’s Festival
DreamBig Children’s Festival has a family-friendly offering that can be enjoyed in your very own home, entering a world of imagination and learning about Kiribati culture along the way.
Review by Claire Davill
The Flying Canoe invites you to build your own canoe out of household items, then embark on an imaginative journey using teamwork and newly-learned Kiribati cultural concepts. Kids will learn where Kiribati is, using Google Earth, and then build a canoe and a Kiribati compass.
The experience encourages imagination and teamwork, and requires very little in the way of props or materials. While it may be possible to cast the program from your computer to the TV screen (as we did), this isn’t necessary. Most of the program is audio-based, and as long as your computer speakers are loud enough, you’ll have no problems.
The program is a fun way to learn and encourage children to use their imagination, and the audio is whimsical, informative and positive!
Things to consider:
- You’ll need a fair bit of space to build your canoe, especially if you have several children participating. The program suggests using bedsheets, string or rope, brooms, fly swatters and pillows or baskets, but it’s up to you – use your ingenuity! Creativity is part of the program.
- The program is definitely designed for a group. The more kids (and adults) partaking, the better!
- The total program runs for about 50 minutes, and smaller children might lose interest. It’s best to remove as many distractions as possible to really immerse your family in the experience.
- The start of the program contains some visuals (Google Earth), but after that, there is no need to be able to see a screen to participate.
- You can stop and start the program at your leisure, so it’s very flexible, giving families the opportunity to experience a DreamBig performance without the constraints of time or place.
- In-person sessions will also be available during the Big Family Weekend, at the Quartet Bar, Festival Theatre
