Burnside Village Dining Precinct | Review

This recently expanded shopping centre in the eastern suburbs has it all: chic décor, aspirational shops, and a new dining precinct with surprisingly budget-friendly eats.

Review by Carla Caruso

If you haven’t visited Burnside Village for a while, you’re in for a shock.

The shopping centre has come a long way since I temped there as a bank teller years ago, when it was a hodgepodge of indoor and outdoor shops, and you sometimes had to dodge raindrops (showing my age!).

A recent expansion by the local Cohen family, launched in June 2025, has doubled its footprint to nearly 39,000 square metres over three levels, adding more than 80 new stores – including Uniqlo, Tiffany, Coco Republic, LSKD and Le Creuset – along with a striking new dining precinct.

Though the centre’s famed gum tree, once under a glazed roof, is gone, its legacy lives on in the 2,000 square-metre curved steel-and-glass canopy that now crowns the space. The neutral, minimalist décor heightens the glamour, evoking Sydney, European sophistication, or a James Bond film.

I recently visited its new alfresco rooftop dining precinct with my family of four during a busy Saturday lunchtime.

There’s a huge range of eateries available, many open late, with more to come. Highlights include 18th Street Hot Pot, Superbutter (a Japanese-French café and bakery by the team behind Mr Chu’s), Bami & Co for Vietnamese street food, Kazumi Ramen, Momoto for sushi, the Italian-inspired Eccoci Ristorante downstairs, and more.

We chose Sip & Sear, a Korean BBQ spot, tempted by lunch items like the Korean fried chicken sando and Wagyu beef katsu sando. Everything we tried – including kimchi fried rice with a fried egg, spicy pork with rice, and hot chips – was sensational.

Portions were generous, leaving plenty of leftovers for dinner (all for around $100). My kids have already vowed to return, though next time we’d likely order fewer dishes. (Please note: if you’re vegan, vegetarian, or a pescatarian like me, choices are a bit limited; the eatery’s very meat-heavy.)

Other food spots are also dotted around the centre, including at the Village Market.

Beyond dining, Burnside frequently hosts pop-up events and activations. We visited before Lunar New Year, when guests could hang a wish on its red tree. The first 888 participants were gifted a horse bag charm in celebration of the Year of the Fire Horse.

Parking at the popular centre can still be tricky, despite the 2025 expansion that added 560 undercover spaces across two basement levels, complete with EV charging stations.

However, the iconic red and green overhead lights above the parking spots continue to guide drivers to available spaces. If you’re lucky, you might even park next to a McLaren – anything’s possible at an upscale centre like Burnside!

A bit of history about Burnside Village

Established in the early 1970s as a ribbon development along Portrush and Greenhills Roads, Burnside Village originally included two supermarkets and a row of shops. Major expansions followed in 1988 (adding undercover parking and the Atrium Mall), 1989–1992 (Village Market and Village Pharmacy), and 2009–2011 (refurbishments, glass atrium, Atrium Mall and fashion court). Today, it’s a thriving premium shopping and lifestyle destination.

What we like about it

  • The light, airy atmosphere thanks to the glass-roofed design – bright and inviting no matter the weather
  • Spacious baby-changing facilities, plus a comfortable lounge area when you need to rest your feet
  • The opportunity to shop (or simply window-shop) designer fashion brands once only available interstate, alongside more accessible favourites like Zara, Uniqlo and Seed
  • Day-to-night fare in the new Village Dining precinct

Things to consider

  • Some shoppers prefer to find street parking rather than navigate the centre’s car park, which can be hectic during peak times.

  • The size of the shopping centre, flashing storefronts and bustling crowds may feel overwhelming for some – it’s wise to pace yourself.

  • Don’t forget your wallet; it may feel a little lighter after a visit here!
