Confucius Institute Family Day | OzAsia Festival | 8 Oct 2017

Confucius Institute Family Day

A vibrant, fun-filled family day at the University of Adelaide, celebrating the diversity of tastes and cultures throughout China.

Go along and taste authentic Chinese food, participate in free Tai Chi classes, calligraphy and painting workshops and drawing lessons. There is something for everyone including a selection of cultural performances onsite all day.

Take the family on a whirlwind exploration of China here in Adelaide.

Curated by Stephen Whittington as part of the Confucius Institute Family Day, a selection of Chinese music acts will perform for free.

From noon onwards there will be roving music performances outdoors including Erhu Duo.

Inside Elder Hall, see some well-known local musicians from the Chinese community along with invited artists from China:

  • 12.30 pm | Elder Conservatorium Chinese Orchestra
  • 1.15 pm | School of Chinese Music & Arts Youth Orchestra
  • 2pm | Cui Jiayi – Yangqin (from Beijing)
  • 3pm | Moonta Street World Music Group

On the Goodman Lawns of the University of Adelaide (just near Pulteney Street) be sure to check out the HOME art installation of little pigs in red houses with ringing bells.

Kids will love running around the little pigs and ringing the bells when you touch them.

The 72 sculptures in this installation were inspired by the Chinese character for ‘home’ which is comprised of two parts, representing a roof and a boar or pig. In ancient China, domesticated pigs were integral to daily life, symbols of prosperity and as a result lived inside the home.

The installation was created by the artist/performer/musician Leung Kei-cheuk, aka Gaybird, who has taken this ancient concept and transposed it to a contemporary context specific to Adelaide and the Chinese community.

The dayglow white pigs were inspired by the sculptures in Rundle Mall officially known as ‘A Day Out’ created by Marguerite Derricourt, installed in 1999, while the evocative red houses in which the pigs are ensconced are based on the Elder Conservatorium, opened in 1900.

HOME celebrates the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Adelaide and their commitment to cross cultural engagement.

The installation is a reminder that home evokes specific feelings and associations for each individual and that Adelaide is a second home to many, who seek to integrate their conceptions of home with their current reality.
