Start your family’s gratitude jar on January 1st and at the end of 2025 you can look back on everyone’s special moments and favourite memories.
Gratitude jars are a great mindfulness activity for kids as it encourages them to practice gratitude on a regular basis. A simple way to record memorable moments from your child’s point of view, choose how often you would like them to record a note, be it daily, weekly or a little less often. There are no rules apart from consistency, so that you have a jar full of notes to read out at the end of the year. It’s a great family friendly activity to enjoy on New Year’s Eve!
There is always something to be grateful for and mindfulness has shown to help decrease anxiety and increase happiness. Ask your child what they are thankful for – they can write about absolutely anything that brings them joy. It can be as simple as enjoying their favourite breakfast, a play at the local park or a visit with grandparents.
You can use any type of jar you have lying around the house, or you can purchase jars with lids from stores like Kmart or Big W for a few dollars. Add a sticker or tie on a tag with ribbon or string with each child’s name so they each have their own jar.
There are lots of websites such as Etsy that have printable gratitude cards if you prefer a more formal approach, or simply cut up some paper into squares or strips to use. Fold or roll them up before popping them in the jar.
