Hiccup! by Windmill Theatre Co – Review
by Sharon Harrington
Join Eddie and his animal friends on their mission to cure a koala with the hiccups in this luminous, retro rock camping adventure comedy!
Eddie and his best bud, Lucky the Teddy, set up camp in the outback, desperate for a chance to leave the noisy city behind and enjoy a perfectly quiet night in the bush. All turns pear shaped when Eddie goes in search of the source of the scary sounds in the night, which turn out to be caused by a super cute, big-eared koala with a really bad case of hiccups. With help from a cheeky quokka and a crazy-eyed, thieving emu, he sets out to try to cure the koala of the hiccups and hopefully enjoy a quiet night’s sleep!
This show is a whole lot of fun, with loveable puppet and human characters, a gorgeous set and a fabulous soundtrack! The set is stunning, showing the glowing pink, red and mustard hues of a campground at sunset. When night falls, the room darkens and is lit by shimmering stars and a crescent moon. The musical score has a retro psychedelic rock vibe, which often reminded me of The Doors, with some 80’s pop thrown in.
Speaking of retro vibes, our hero Eddie, the cautiously quirky camper is a delight to behold in his vintage 80’s pink leg warmers, tiny shorts, silver puffer vest and furry hat with earflaps.
This is a great show for children, as the intimate venue ensures all can see the characters’ silly expressions, adorable puppets and slapstick comedy up close. Partway through, when attentions might start to lag, the audience is encouraged to join in on a sing-a-long. Children will learn some fun facts about animals and hiccups without realizing they are learning.
This show also has some lovely messages about discovering creative solutions to problems, teamwork, and finding friendship in unexpected places. As a parent, I loved the look and sound of the show and enjoyed the silliness too.
This show is a real crowd pleaser for both children and parents!
