Hidden Disabilities Sunflower

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it is not there.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a simple tool for you to voluntarily share that you have a disability or condition that may not be immediately apparent – and that you may need a helping hand, understanding, or more time in shops, at work, on transport, or in public spaces.
Globally 1 in 6 of us live with a disability. That is approximately 1.3 billion people. But while some of us experience a disability that is visible, many have a non-visible condition or experience a combination of both visible and non-visible conditions. These disabilities can be temporary, situational or permanent. They can be neurological, cognitive and neurodevelopmental as well as physical, visual, auditory and include sensory and processing difficulties. They can also be respiratory as well as chronic health conditions such as arthritis and diabetes, chronic pain and sleep disorders.

What does the Sunflower lanyard mean? Making the invisible visible.
Living with a hidden disability, like autism, can make accessing the community more challenging for people. Hidden Disabilities can be difficult for others to recognise, which is often the biggest barrier for people accessing additional support and understanding.
As diverse as hidden disability conditions are, so are individual access needs and the barriers faced in each person’s daily life. You or your child can opt to wear the Sunflower to discreetly be seen in shops, at work, on transport, or when out in public spaces.

The green Sunflower lanyard is worn by people with non-visible disabilities who may need a little more time, support or understanding.
The white supporter lanyard or badge is worn by trained staff and carers who recognise the Sunflower and know how to assist. Look out for these at Sunflower-friendly places. Together, they help make every space more inclusive.
