Easy Pancakes for Kids to Make

Easy Pancake Recipe for Kids

Pancakes. They’re a staple at our house. Great for breakfast… and even occasionally for dinner, when you’re all out of ideas!

There is no need to buy the pre-packaged stuff at the shops, this recipe works every time. You only need a few basic ingredients to make them from scratch and it’s easy enough the kids can help make them.

If you’re short on time you can even make the batter a few hours ahead of time (or the night before) and store it in the fridge until ready to use. We especially love pancakes as an after school snack.

What You Need for the Pancakes:

1 Cup of Self Raising Flour

1 Cup of Milk

1 Egg

Butter or oil for cooking

Some people like to add a pinch of salt or sugar but they are fine without.

Using these ratios you can double or triple the mixture depending on how many you would like to make.

Pancake Toppings:

The choice is endless with so many sweet and savoury options that work with pancakes.  Our go to favourite topping include  freshly squeezed lemon juice and sugar or fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries and raspberries) with maple syrup.  We also love sliced banana and honey.  You can even add berries or chocolate to the mixture to make blueberry pancakes or choc-chop pancakes.

Instructions

Just whisk together the ingredients. The quickest way is to use a hand mixer or stab mixer. You’ll get a smooth batter in no time. Add extra milk or some water to thin out the mixture if you would like thinner pancakes.

You can either pour the mixture into the pan straight from a jug but kids will find it easier to scoop the mixture into the pan using a ladle.

Wait for bubbles to appear before flipping over and wait for them to turn golden brown.

Keep some aluminium foil over the pancakes while you are cooking so they stay nice and warm.

The batter also lasts in the fridge for up to 2 days. We re-use a soft drink bottle and fill it with the batter and put it in the esky when going camping. You can pour straight from the bottle into the pan. It’s that easy!

Pancake Day

Pancake Day always falls on a Tuesday. It takes place 47 days before Easter Sunday, so each year the date changes according to the Christian calendar and the days of Easter.

What is Pancake Day?

Pancake Day, also known as Pancake Tuesday and Shrove Tuesday, takes place the day before Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent and is traditionally a time of fasting.  For many families this is the last opportunity to use up foods such as eggs, sugar and butter before their fast begins, therefore these ingredients are often used to make pancakes, hence the name Pancake Day.

I’m 69 years old and often find the easiest way to make something good to eat is to try kids cooking things. My wife is going out to night so I have decided to make myself some pancakes so I looked up your websites and now I’m ready to go.
