Plastic Free July | Choose to Refuse Single-Use Plastic

Join the challenge and ‘Choose To Refuse’ single-use plastic during July.

Imagine a world without plastic waste. That’s the mission – to build a global movement that dramatically reduces plastic use and improves recycling, worldwide.

Why Plastic Free July?

Plastic Free July aims to raise awareness of the problems with single-use disposable plastic and challenges people to do something about it.

Did you know that, apart from the small amount of plastic which is incinerated, every piece of plastic which was ever made still exists on earth somewhere? And that more plastic was produced in the first 10 years of this century than the entire last century?

Australians send 1 million tonnes of plastic to landfill each year.

We can all do our part to make a change.  Joining the challenge is quite simple…choose to refuse single-use plastic during July.  You’ll be joining a million+ people world-wide from 130 countries in making a difference.

Take the #BiomePledge to reduce single use plastic, share it on social media, and you could WIN a $100 Biome voucher every week in July!

How to enter:

  1. Share a photo of your single use plastic free pledge on Facebook or Instagram. The photo could be of your reusable items, in one of the Biome stores, or you could repost one of our #BiomePledge graphics that will be appearing on Facebook and Instagram throughout July.
  2. Tag your photo with #BiomePledge

Biome will then select a new winner at random every Friday in July. That means there are four chances to win!

How to get involved:

Step 1: Sign up to be counted.  Plastic Free July will email you each week with tips and inspiration weekly throughout July.

Step 2: Take the Pesky Plastics Quiz.  This will help you track down where your plastics come from.

Step 3: Choose what you will do, such as avoiding the plastics that seem to fill your recycling bin; targeting the takeaway items that could end up in the ocean; going completely plastic free (finding alternatives to everything) for a day, week, month or more!

Step 4: Use the Plastic Free July Toolbox and spread the word through chatting with and challenging friends; running a plastic free morning tea; posting your successes on social media and tag @PlasticFreeJuly; posting the challenge the old fashion way (with posters about town); asking your local café or shop to seek alternatives; pressing for policy change on container deposits, packaging standards, plastic bag bans or action to outlaw microbeads.

Step 5: Share your success by tallying up the plastics you ‘saved’.  Share on social media using the hashtag #choosetorefuse and be sure to tag @PlasticFreeJuly so they can see and applaud your efforts!
