Relaxed, Sensory-Friendly Sessions | South Australian Museum

The South Australian Museum hosts sensory-friendly sessions for visitors of all ages, their families, friends, and support workers.

Visit the South Australian Museum out of hours where visitors with autism and other sensory or access requirements can enjoy a quieter, less crowded visit to the Museum. This is a chance to see all of the permanent galleries, and maybe discover something you’ve never noticed before.

While everyone is always welcome, the South Australian Museum acknowledges that sometimes the crowds and noise make visits harder for neurodivergent visitors and those living with a disability. For these events, they alter some of the screens, lights and sounds around the Museum to make it a more sensory friendly experience.

In March 2018, the Museum was declared an Autism Friendly Venue by Autism SA.

Sensory Backpacks:

Attendees can enjoy the Museum galleries and sensory backpacks will also be available to borrow free of charge. Backpacks include noise cancelling headphones, a soft toy, a fidget toy and a set of communication cards. Backpacks will be loaned out on a first come first served basis.

Important Information:

  • The Terrace Eatery and Museum Shop will not be open during this event.
  • If you have any questions or further access requirements, please contact education@samuseum.sa.gov.au

Tickets:

This events are ticketed for people with sensory needs and their accompanying family, friends or support workers. Please purchase a ticket for all attendees when you book.

This is a pay what you can event meaning that event-goers contribute what they can afford to give for each ticket. Payment will help support these programs in the future.
