Visit one of the world’s most prized aviation exhibits at Adelaide Airport Terminal
Adelaide Airport opened its doors on Monday 19 December 2022 to a brand new, state of the art exhibit showcasing the historic 100 year old bi-plane, The Vickers Vimy. The aircraft famously made its journey from England to Australia with an all-Australian crew in 1919. Brothers Sir Ross and Sir Keith Smith along with Jim Bennet and Wally Shiers made the journey in 28 days with a map and a compass.
Award-winning experience design studio, Sandpit, were brought on board to bring to life a rich archive of historical material over 100 years old. Utilising the exhibitions multiple interactive touch screens and projection canvas, Sandpit have designed a complete audio visual experience showcasing the story of the Vickers Vimy plane, the flight, the crew and the heroic stories that ensued.
With the help of the Young Adelaide Voices choir, Sandpit also produced the first ever recording of the song Our Flying Boys, a celebration song written by E Ronchetti-Allein and Jack Fewster which can be heard for the first time in 100 years at the exhibit alongside an interview by the celebrated pilot, Wally Shiers.
Sandpit Co-Founder Sam Haren said, “we’re thrilled to work with Adelaide Airport on the legacy of The Vickers Vimy, by bringing to life such a rich archive of historical content and enlightening future generations on a pivotal moment in aviation history.”
In an extremely delicate operation earlier this year, The Vickers Vimy was relocated from its old hangar near the airport’s long term car park to a new purpose-built exhibition space within the recently expanded domestic and international terminal.
The Vickers Vimy exhibition space will be open to the public 8am to 8pm, 365 days a year. The $7 million project has been jointly funded by the Federal Government, South Australian Government and Adelaide Airport as part of the terminal expansion project.
