Barossa Valley Region Family Friendly Holiday Ideas – Places to Visit in the Barossa

The Barossa Valley is a beautiful region to visit with the family and it’s perfect for a short getaway because it’s so close to Adelaide – approximately a 1 hour drive from the city. If you’re planning on a longer holiday, there are plenty of things to see and do with a great range of fantastic family accommodation available.

Food Options & Eating Out

There’s no shortage of fabulous restaurants, cafes and wineries to discover in the Barossa Valley.

Melba’s Chocolates & Confectionery at Angaston – The new store and cafe at Angaston (opened 8 March 2024), is a perfect place for families to stop for a picnic on the lawn, a bite to eat and drink, and to take in beautiful views across the vineyards. Design your own chocolate fondue or Golden North Ice Cream topped with your choice of lollies, try one of their chocolate pots or pick up lunch. You can even take your own picnic to enjoy on the lawn. Plus they have all of Melba’s trademark goodies in store for you to stock up on. Read our review here.

Barossa Valley Chocolate Company – Here you will find a huge range of artisan chocolates – it would be hard to leave empty-handed. There is also ice cream available, or if you’d prefer to sit down on the deck next to the lake, there are drinks, lunch and cakes available including a kids menu. The Barossa Valley Cellar is also situated within this complex and here you can do wine flights and chocolate pairings.  Read our review

Ember Pizza – Great value, casual dining, great for families with fantastic pizza.

Novotel Barossa Valley Resort – The restaurant can accommodate children with a kids menu featuring dishes of generous proportion. Great mains and fantastic desserts too.

Tanunda Bakery and Cafe – For pies, pasties and sausage rolls on the go.

Harvest Kitchen – Fantastic quality restaurant food and wines with a more adventurous Mediterranean menu, with stunning views across the vineyards. Kids are welcome and there is even a small kids playroom and kids menu.

The Vintage Chef Co at Chateau Yaldara has a fantastic play area where the kids have their own mini cafe. Read a review by @mustardmamma

Visit the Farm Eatery for lunch then grab your picnic basket with cheese, chutneys, wine and sauce from Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop – an iconic foodie destination.

If you get a chance, make sure you swing by the Barossa Farmers Market for fresh local produce. If you are planning to cook your own meals while visiting, be sure to grab your ingredients from here.

Penfolds Wines – If you are taking a bike ride from Angaston to Nuriootpa, ride an extra 5 minutes and stop at Penfolds for some wine tasting while the kids enjoy some Barossa Valley Ice Cream.

Family Friendly Accommodation

There is plenty of family friendly accommodation in this region, including the Barossa Valley Holiday Park, Big 4 Barossa Tourist Park and Novotel Barossa. They all offer outdoor pools plus games areas, which is great for when everyone needs a little break from venturing out.  There are also lots of B&B’s in the area too.

The region is well known for it’s wine and food, however, there are also some great family-friendly places to visit.

Wine Tasting

The Barossa Valley is a wine lover’s dream. The region is brimming with amazing wineries, many with stunning views and delicious food.

If you are planning to do some wine tasting with kids in tow while in the Barossa, we recommend a maximum of 2 wineries in one day. Many wineries have pretty gardens or a lawn area where children can wander and play.

You really can’t go wrong with wineries in the Barossa, but here are some suggestions for top notch wines in fabulous settings:

Pindarie Winery – Absolutely unbeatable views over the vineyards, this property features original farmhouse buildings, magnificent trees, wine and lunch. A great place to sit back and relax.

Bethany Wines – If you’re a fan of sweet wines, then you simply must visit this enchanting winery with beautiful views over the valley and a unique cellar door. You will feel as though you have just ventured into the south of France!

Torbreck-Vintners – A James Halliday 5 star rated winery with a beautiful outlook across the vineyards, a lovely lawned area for the kids to wander and amazing wines!

Whistler Wines – A family friendly winery with play equipment, trees to climb and a cubby house. Read our review

Fun Family Activities in the Barossa

Angaston Mountain Bike Trail at Barossa Station (see below)

Barossa Adventure Station – This family-friendly adventure facility features a one-kilometre mountain bike trail, flying fox, accessible trampolines, bespoke tower and slide, skate ramps, bouldering wall, half-court basketball, sensory sound forest poles and serene picnic spaces.

Barossa Bowland & Mini Golf Dinosaur themed Mini Golf and 12-lane ten-pin bowling centre.

Bike ride from Angaston to Nuriootpa – This sealed bike track takes you from the heart of Angaston to Nuriootpa. Read more here

Barossa Sculpture Park at Mengler’s Hill – Enjoy scenic views while you wander amongst the impressive sculptures.

Seppeltsfield Winery – One of Australia’s oldest wineries. Even if it’s too busy to do some wine tasting here, make sure you explore the fabulous estate gardens. Restaurant “Fino” is also located here and would be the perfect place for a long lunch on a girls weekend away.

Jam Factory – The Jam Factory is also located within the Seppeltsfield Winery. You can meet the makers including a knife maker, milliner, ceramicist, glass blower and jeweller. You may also be able to watch them at work if they are working on the day you visit. There is also a gallery and shop with stunning pieces on display. All pieces are South Australian designed and made, so if you make a purchase, you know you will be supporting the local economy.

Seppeltsfield Mausoleum – Built in 1927 for generations of the Seppelt family, one of Australia’s largest winemaking families. This is private property and visitors are not allowed into the mausoleum, however, you are allowed to admire the Doric style mausoleum.

Whispering Wall – The wall is aptly named ‘Whispering Wall’ because of its parabola effect – voices can be heard from one end of the wall to the other, which is quite amazing considering the length of the curved wall is 140m from one end to the other!
