Bluey ‘The Beach’ Birthday Cake | Recipe & Instructions

How to Make Your Own Bluey ‘The Beach’ Birthday Cake

by Katrina Gogel

Like many young kids these days, our youngest is obsessed with the popular Aussie children’s TV show Bluey. For his recent fourth birthday he ummed and ahhhed between the Women’s Weekly train cake (he’s also obsessed with trains) or a Bluey themed birthday cake. In the end, Bluey won out!

Taking inspiration from a photo that was posted on the Woolies/Coles Mudcake Hacks Facebook page, I managed to pull off ‘The Beach’ Bluey birthday cake for one very excited four-year-old.

If you want to do the same, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Cake (either homemade or un-iced store-bought cake)
  • Icing (either store bought or butter icing – see bottom of page for my chocolate cake and icing recipes)
  • Blue Aeroplane jelly
  • Chocolate finger biscuits (I used the Coles brand ones)
  • YoYo or Arrowroot biscuits
  • Guylian chocolate shells
  • Bluey figurines (purchased from Target)
  • Happy Birthday cake topper (mine was from Kmart)
  • Paper cocktail umbrellas (I found these at Woolies)

How to Assemble:

Making this cake was actually easier, and a lot quicker to put together than I expected. Allow approximately half an hour to make the icing, and decorate. The beauty of a cake like this is that the biscuits and jelly cover over all of the icing, so your icing job can be super quick, and not picture perfect.

  1. If baking your own cake, I’d suggest baking the night before required.
  2. Make the blue jelly the night before, and allow to set in fridge overnight.
  3. Make your icing just before assembling (recipe below).
  4. Cut your cake to the desired size, and trim a section off the top for the ocean.
  5. Ice your cake. I had plain coloured icing underneath the sand, and blue icing for underneath the jelly/ocean.
  6. Stick the chocolate fingers around the edge of your cake.
  7. Crush or blitz biscuits until they resemble a fine crumb. Sprinkle onto the cake in the sand section, and around the base of the cake.
  8. Scoop out some of the set jelly and place in a bowl. Using a spoon, break up the jelly to create small lumps. Scoop jelly lumps onto the ocean section of the cake.
  9. Place Bluey figurines, Happy Birthday banner, chocolate shells and umbrellas on top of cake. We also happened to have a little pelican figurine at home that we added to the cake board, as a pelican features in The Beach Bluey episode and book.
  10. Don’t forget to add the candles just before singing Happy Birthday!

Tips:

  • There’s an episode of Bluey where they go to the pool, so instead of a beach themed cake, you could make the Women’s Weekly pool cake, and add Bluey figurines to the top!
  • I baked a big (double batch) chocolate cake, and made my cake nearly double height. If making a double height cake, use chocolate biscuit fingers as they are tall. If making a regular cake, you could use TV snack biscuits instead.
  • Cake hack it! Buy un-iced mud or sponge cakes from Foodland, Woolies or Coles.

Boiled Chocolate Cake Recipe

This recipe has been in our family for years. In fact, many of my birthday cakes as a child were made using this very recipe. It has now become my go-to when I bake a choccy cake for my own children.

Ingredients:

2 ½ cups sugar
2 cups water
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
250 grams butter (cut up into cubes)
1 teaspoon bi-carb soda
4 eggs
3 cups SR flour

Method:

Place the sugar, water, cocoa powder and butter into a large saucepan. Bring to the boil, stirring regularly. Once boiled, take from the stove and let it cool down (until you can dip your finger in it). Stir in the bi-carb soda. Tip mixture into a large bowl then gradually beat in SR flour and eggs with an electric mixer, until there are no lumps. Place in a large greased/lined cake tin and bake in 180c fan forced oven for approximately 40 minutes.

  • This recipe makes one large, delicious rectangle chocolate cake (tin size approx. 38cm x 27cm). If you want to make a regular sized round or square cake, you will need to halve the ingredients and cook for approx. 30-35 minutes.
  • To cool the boiled mixture down quicker (and speed up the cake-making process) I place the saucepan in a sink of shallow cold water.
  • Baking times may vary depending on your oven. I’d recommend setting your timer for 5-10 minutes less than stated baking time, and check with a skewer every few minutes until cake is cooked.

Butter Icing Recipe:

Ingredients:

125 grams of butter, at room temp
1 ½ cups icing sugar
2 tablespoons of milk

Method:

Place butter in a small mixing bowl and beat with an electric beater until butter turns white. Gradually add the icing sugar and milk, beating constantly until all mixed together. Mixture should be smooth and easy to spread.

  • Add a few drops of food colouring and mix together with a knife, if desired.

One Response to “Bluey ‘The Beach’ Birthday Cake | Recipe & Instructions”

Thank you for your very handy tips and instructions, they are clear and very easy to follow and you’ve left nothing out.

I am in the process of making this cake and I thought I’d use your boiled chocolate cake for a try. I am used to boiled fruit cakes but didn’t think of boiled chocolate cake. I am not a chocolate cake lover but everyone else is and I am celebrating triplets birthday on Australia Day and they love Bluey. I was going to make the figurines but have decided your idea is better and they can play with them later.

    Thanks Again for your post.
