Adelaide’s Best Wetlands to Visit with Kids
You may have noticed that quite a few wetlands have been appearing around Adelaide, with many located along side nature play spaces, parks and playgrounds. A beautiful green space with an abundance of wildlife and aquatic life, wetlands are a wonderful place to explore.
Wetlands can form naturally or be man-made and over the past twenty years numerous wetlands have been built throughout metropolitan Adelaide. Described as ‘an area of land covered by water either year-round or just at certain times’, wetlands are the perfect way to improve water quality. They filter stormwater and help us use water more sustainably, and man-made wetlands have now become part of better managing South Australiaβs water supply.
The increase in βconstructed wetlandsβ reflects a cultural change in Australia, as people place more importance on the environment. Healthy wetlands act as filtering systems, removing sediment, nutrients and pollutants from water. They are also useful to better manage stormwater runoffs, support wildlife, plus they are appealing to residents who live nearby. The recently completed wetlands in Kensington Gardens is a great example of a constructed wetland, along with the huge wetland project currently under construction at Victoria Park.
