Hugh Johnson Boulevard Reserve Playground in Sheidow Park – Review
by Brooke Hendry
Hugh Johnson Boulevard Reserve in Sheidow Park is a great area for families, featuring two playgrounds – one for juniors and another for the more adventurous, plus a cute Enchanted Forest, a sports area with mini soccer goals, 3 on 3 basketball court and netball ring, and a pump truck.
There is an official public opening on Sunday 28 August 2022, from 10am – 12pm which will include a free sausage sizzle, face painting and ‘Come and Try’ sessions for soccer, basketball and netball. But, in the meantime, the temporary fencing has gone down so you’re welcome to come for a squiz beforehand.
The older kids’ play space includes:
- A challenging climbing tower with the tallest tunnel slide in the City of Marion!
- A climbing wall
- Balancing steps
- 4-person merry-go-round-swings
- Adult fitness equipment
- BBQ and 2 x sheltered picnic tables (with lighting)
And, the younger kids’ play space includes:
- A partially shaded climbing-cubby with slide
- A seesaw
- Swings
- Small merry-go-round
- BBQ and 2 x sheltered picnic tables (with lighting)
Find the fairies in the Enchanted Forest
The kids will also enjoy finding fairies and hidden treasures, or brewing up potions in the Enchanted Forest!
Bike Paths
You’ll also find duck ponds within the Reserve, and bitumen paths which lead you to all the different play areas – making it easy for those with a pram, or for those wanting to ride their bikes or scooters.
What we liked:
- We liked how well-spaced the separate areas are, with lots to see and discover along the way to each section.
- There are other options besides just the playground. This is great, especially if the equipment is all being used – you can take the kids for a walk to see the Enchanted Forest, or they can ride their bikes/scooters on the paths or at the pump track, or go run around and kick a ball or shoot some hoops.
- That there are toilets (yay!). Located near the junior playground.
- The sheltered picnic areas with BBQ and lighting are great, especially if wanting to use the space for a birthday party.
Things to consider:
- The playgrounds are not fenced off but they are also not too close to traffic or the water areas.
- If the park is busy, you may have to park a bit further away from the playground/entrance areas. Parallel parking is available on Hugh Johnson Boulevard or Patpa Drive.
- There’s quite a few food options close by, with fast-food options available approx. a 3 minute drive in Hallett Cove. There are also supermarkets, a bakery, café’s etc. within the Hallett Cove Shopping Centre. Trott Park shops are also a short drive away.
