Easy Oreo Spider Chocolate Cupcakes to make for Halloween
These cute cupcakes are simple to make for your next Halloween themed party or just as a treat for the kids. All of the ingredients can be found at most major supermarkets (these were all bought at Woolworths) and the kids can help with most steps. You can choose to make the cupcakes from scratch or use a packet mix to speed up the process (any brand will do).
Refer to the tips below when buying your ingredients as there are substitutes if you can’t find what you need, and be sure to buy enough of everything for the number of cupcakes you wish to make.
For the Cupcakes:
- Chocolate Cupcake Mix (most make 12 cupcakes and you will also need eggs, butter and milk)
- Chocolate Frosting (icing, butter and milk or water)
For the Spiders:
- Oreo Biscuits (original)
- Pocky Sticks
- Candy Eyeballs
Method:
- Cook the cupcakes as per the directions on the packet and once cooked, allow to cool completely.
- Prepare the icing mix/frosting in a bowl (or use the ready made frosting if you purchase a cupcake mix that has it included). You will also need some of the frosting for the Oreo spiders.
While the cupcakes are cooking and then cooling, you can make the Oreo spiders.
Oreo Spiders
Cut the Pocky sticks to about 4cm pieces – save one to use as a measuring guide to continue cutting so they are all equal.
Gently pull or twist the Oreo biscuit apart and press the Pocky legs into the biscuit with the most cream.
Place some frosting where the 8 legs meet and press the other Oreo biscuit back on top of the legs – the frosting helps to better secure the Oreo back together.
Using a toothpick, put a little frosting on the back of the candy eyes and stick on top of the Oreo spider biscuit.
Once your cupcakes are completely cold you can ice them with the frosting. Place your Oreo Spiders straight onto your frosted cupcakes before the icing sets.
Play & Go Tips:
- allow for breakages with the Pocky sticks and Oreo biscuits, so buy a few more than you think you will need.
- the Pocky share packet contains 8 packs of 11 sticks – so 88 sticks. This will make 11 spiders if only using the end of the Pocky sticks.
- this recipe used one Pocky stick for each spider leg (the leftovers were put in a container to have as snacks) however if you don’t mind the cut edge you could easily make two or three legs per stick.
- if you can’t find the candy eyes you could make your own with a white chocolate melt or mini marshmallow and a dot of black icing.
- cupcakes don’t have to be chocolate – you could also make vanilla or another flavour.
