Semaphore South Foreshore Playground | Semaphore South | Review

Semaphore South Foreshore Playground is right next to the beach but located away from the busy central foreshore, is fully fenced and perfect for younger kids.

Review by Claire Davill

This ocean themed playground is the perfect spot for families who want a quieter seaside playground. It’s less busy than nearby playgrounds and the blue soft fall and shade sales create a beautifully calming environment.

There’s plenty of equipment suitable for smaller kids here, including monkey bars that aren’t too high off the ground.

There’s some cute “telephone” flowers right near each other for whispering secret messages.

A group of springy platforms encourage imaginative play – they could be surf boards or rafts. There’s also a large springy boat that’s big enough for parents as well as kids, and a little springy dolphin and fish.

A couple of climbing nets and balance rope provide some challenge for bigger kids, and there are some widely spaced elevated stepping stones to traverse as well.

The central ship-shaped play equipment is great for smaller children, and includes port holes and sliding shapes underneath, and a climbing net, slide and ladder above.

There’s a great xylophone in the playground as well, with instructions to play “row, row, row your boat” – and the keys are even in tune!

There are plenty of swings here, with two toddler swings, two regular swings and a basket swing.

Just outside of the fenced playground there is a picnic shelter with no table, but lawn to put a picnic rug down. There is also a path to the beach here, with a little free sand-play library containing rakes, buckets and sandcastle-building toys to borrow.

There is an exe-loo toilet just over the bike path behind the old Noonies Kiosk building. Note that the kiosk is currently closed (as at September 2024).

Things to Consider:

  • The miniature Semaphore Steam Train runs between the playground and the toilet, so be extra careful when crossing the tracks.
  • The coastal bike/walking path passes right by the playground, so this makes a great stop for a play. Check for bikes before crossing the path to enter the playground.
  • There is plenty of off-street parking to the north and south of the playground, accessible from The Esplanade.

Our favourite nearby coffee spots/cafes:

Unfortunately the adjacent Noonies Kiosk is closed. There are multiple cafes at Semaphore and nearby Port Adelaide.

Location:

The Esplanade, Semaphore South, opposite Arthur Street.

The Semaphore Playground is one of the stops along the North Haven to Point Malcolm Coastal Bike Path – read our family-friendly bike ride review.
