Princess Elizabeth Playground | South Terrace Adelaide | Review

Princess Elizabeth Playground is a modern playspace combining active, sensory and nature play opportunities located on the edge of the Adelaide CBD.

We have visited the upgraded Princess Elizabeth Playground a few times now, and we can easily say it deserves a place in our top parks and playgrounds list.

Princess Elizabeth Playground is a fabulous place for children to learn and have fun, be challenged and explore, make up an adventure and engage the senses in a natural and beautiful landscape setting. The re-design of this all ages, multi-activity playground involved consultation with local playground experts – the children from the nearby Sturt Street Primary School.

There is plenty of equipment to climb here including this two towered climbing net.

Here it is up close. Kids can climb up each tower and also walk across from one tower to the other.

The multi-faceted structure below offers many climbing, swinging, inventive and adventurous play opportunities. It includes ladders, climbing frames, wobbly platform boards, monkey bars and slide poles.

The monkey bars here are designed so that you can swing under them, or climb over them.

The spinning see-saw below is like a mini version of the one down the road at the South Terrace Glover Playground.

Over the other side of the playground you can’t miss the medieval inspired tower. The spiral staircase takes you up to the top with lookouts on the way, then a winding slippery slide takes you down again. A smaller slide is there for younger kids. It’s a great spot for imaginative play.

Plus there is an eye-catching spider swing next to the tower.

There are four mini trampolines to get kids bouncing.

The bowl swing below is great for co-operative play. I watched kids of different ages work out amongst themselves who was going to sit where, who was going to push, when to stop and take turns. Great for social play and learning.

The playground design incorporates natural elements using logs, planks, pebbles, plantings and sand. These elements take many forms and serve multiple purposes, such as seating areas made up of logs and rocks that are also play elements for climbing or jumping over. Trees and blackboards double up as shade elements and concrete edging and paver bands act as balancing beams. Don’t miss the sword in the stone.

There are little rocking rides for little ones and swings for all ages and abilities.

There are large shade sails over the climbing equipment and also over a large sand pit, which contains a seated digging machine.

There are bbq facilities, picnic tables, drinking fountains, bench seating and toilets. The playground is adjacent a large sports field so plenty of open areas for ball sports and running around. There are existing trees providing shade and a selection of 46 new semi-advanced trees are are already providing some extra shade. 

Please note – this is not a fully fenced playground. There is fencing all around the road side of the playground but it ends on the sides as shown below. Therefore if you have little ones or ‘runners’ you do need to be mindful of this.

A key theme of this playground is age inclusive play equipment, allowing all ages and abilities to play together according to skill level and preference, rather than segregating the playground into different age groups. This works well for families with children of different ages. We’ve spent many hours at this playspace already and the Play & Go kids are always keen to go again. Other playgrounds near here are Glover Playground, also on South Terrace, and Marshmallow Park.
