Charleston Playground in the Adelaide Hills has shady picnic areas, is fully fenced and has lots of fun features including cow statues!

Charleston Playground’s most recent major upgrade resulted in a fun, wooden, whimsical play space in this small Adelaide Hills town. There’s plenty here to keep everyone occupied, and it makes a great stop when driving through the hills, or a short diversion from the Amy Gillett Bikeway.
There’s some beautiful big shade trees and picnic tables, as well as a great all-weather picnic shelter and BBQs. The park is fully fenced and there are toilets nearby.
The main equipment features two wooden towers connected by a rope bridge. Plenty of climbing opportunities are here, including climbing nets, a climbing wall and a spiral pole.
There are windows and portholes to look out of, and a large slide from the top of the larger tower.
Nearby is a large xylophone. You’ll need to find your own stick to play it, but there’s plenty around.
A mini bike track circles the play equipment, and there are two very cute, pretend petrol bowsers to fill up as you do laps.
Nearby are several swings. There is a log-rope long swing, basket swing, regular swing and toddler swing. There’s also a little wooden springy ride-on here too, and some climbing poles.
There’s a huge spinning cup nearby, and some in-ground trampolines. The trampolines have inclined ramps for accessible play.
The park also includes a 3 on 3 basketball hoop and a nearby netball hoop. There’s also exercise equipment for adults and bigger kids at this end of the park.
There are several picnic tables and benches throughout the park, but the all-weather picnic shelter is a great addition for sunny days or rainy days. There’s a BBQ in the shelter and another one nearby.
There are tennis courts within the park as well, and beyond the courts is the Charleston Memorial Hall, and the toilets are located behind the hall.
Don’t forget to check out the cow statues near the picnic shelter. Just behind the statues is a bmx bike track for those who need a bigger challenge than the bike track around the play equipment.
Things to Consider:
- The playground is only partially shaded by trees. You’ll need hats and sunscreen in summer
- Bring bikes for the mini bike track and bmx track. There is a handy bike repair station just in front of the playground as well.
- While the park is fully fenced, the gates do not have child proof latches. There is also a small gap in the fence past the tennis courts, near the toilet block.

Corner of Newman Road and Onkaparinga Valley Road, Charleston. There is plenty of off-street car parking along Newman Road.
If you are riding the Amy Gillett Bikeway, head 150 metres west along Newman road from where the trail crosses the road.
