Civic Park Playground in Modbury – separate sections for big and little kids, plenty of shade, and surrounded by cafes, a library and more.

The sprawling Civic Park in Modbury, across the road from Tea Tree Plaza, is a gorgeous spot for a stop and a play. The large playground has everything from a dedicated fenced area for smaller kids, a large tower with climbing nets and walls for bigger kids, water and sand play, and plenty of swings.

The fenced area contains multiple bridges, two small slides, a springy seesaw and a large springy firetruck.

There are multiple activity boards, climb-through circles and small climbing nets, perfect for littler kids. This whole area is also completely covered by shade sails and has soft fall throughout.

Just outside the fenced area is a large xylophone and some drums – both make impressive music.

The area suitable for bigger kids includes two large towers connected by a rope bridge. There’s a tube slide, two regular slides, lots of climbing walls and nets, and plenty of platforms with windows in the towers.

Nearby, under shade, is a fully accessible merry-go-round and a seated, self-propelled spinner. When we visited, the wheelchair gates on the merry-go-round were flagged off and out of order, but the seats and standing sections were still available.

There’s also a a spinning climbing net here, and a noughts and crosses board.

This section also includes a number of swings. You’ll find two toddler swings, two regular swings and a small basket swing.

There’s a more open area nearby with a large climbing frame and a rope ‘log’ swing, and a water and sand play area with a water pump and stepping stones.

There’s plenty of open lawn nearby to run around on when Civic Park is not playing host to events such as Touch a Truck, Christmas Carols, and various festivals. You can even borrow lawn games and balls from the nearby Tea Tree Gully Library.

There are numerous benches and seats, including wonderful mosaic sculptures. There are barbeques and shelters, and a toilet block with changing facilities.

What we like about Civic Park Playground:

• There’s plenty of playground options for children of all ages and abilities
• Most of the playground is fully shaded and stroller/wheelchair accessible
• There’s plenty of off-street parking, a large shopping centre nearby, and a library within walking distance.

Things to consider:

• The fenced area is not fully fenced – there are some gaps and no lockable gates.
• Note that the car parks that are over the creek, closest to the playground, are for the Modbury Hotel and Pickled Duck customers. There is dedicated parking for Civic Park further north on North East Road, and there is a larger toilet block here too.
• The water play and climbing frame areas have fine sand as soft fall, expect sandy shoes.

Coffee and food options nearby:

• Tea Tree Plaza is located across North East Road, and there is a pedestrian crossing directly in front of the entrance to Civic Park. Tea Tree Plaza has numerous cafe, restaurant and food court options.
• The Pickled Duck is located over the creek from the playground, and is open in the afternoons and evenings, and has a dedicated kid’s menu.
