How to Enjoy the Royal Adelaide Show on a Budget & Family Friendly Show Tips

Learn how to save and make the most of the FREE entertainment and activities at The Show!

As the month of September approaches the excitement grows because the count down to the Royal Adelaide Show begins.  Kids growing up in South Australia look forward to one of the best days of the year in Adelaide – the rides, showbags, food and endless entertainment.

But as parents we know just how expensive the show can be, especially for large families. The Play & Go team have put together our best show saving tips we hope will help your budget stretch that little bit further.

Save on Tickets

Pre-purchase your tickets

The first tip for saving money is to pre-purchase your tickets to The Show. They can be purchased online via Ticketek, or drop into any IGA or Foodland supermarket to buy them. The saving is at least 10% on gate prices, so it’s certainly worth it. For example a Family Pass (for 2 Adults & 2 Children or 1 Adult & 3 Children) is $59 online while at the gate it will cost you $68.50. There’s your cinnamon donuts and churros right there.

Discount Days

If you can, plan to go mid-week on a Wednesday or Thursday BEFORE 1pm.  This year, on Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 September from 9am until 1pm, adults, pensioners and students can enter the Show at the Child Gate Price of just $17.50. Remember, all children under 5 years are free.

(NOTE: After 1pm all entries will revert back to the normal gate price).

Go After 6pm

Enter the Show for $13.50 at the gate after 6pm Monday 2 to Friday 6 September ONLY with a voucher from The Advertiser. There is a limit of one admission ticket per voucher.

Get $10 tickets to the Royal Adelaide Show

BankSA cardholders can get $10 tickets to this year’s Royal Adelaide Show.  These tickets are available for entry after 5pm when purchased online with Ticketek.

RAA Member Offer

RAA Members save at least 15% off the gate price when purchasing a family, adult, child or concession via the RAA website. This offer is available until the 12th of August ONLY. RAA Members click here to purchase tickets.

Transport Options

Rather than paying for a car park, consider public transport. Check the Metro Adelaide App or website for schedules.

Kids and seniors travel FREE!

Kids under five travel free at all times when accompanied by a fare paying adult. Two kids under 15 travel free on weekends when accompanied by an adult using a Daytrip ticket, and seniors can travel free of charge at most times during the week and at all times on weekends.

Bus

Plenty of buses stop along Anzac Highway and Goodwood Road, or if travelling from the city catch the 21W Show Shuttle Bus to and from the Showground. For those in the North-Eastern suburbs the O-Bahn Show express stops by TTP, Paradise & Klemzig.

Train  –  Adelaide Showground Station

Take advantage of the Adelaide Showground railway station located adjacent to the Showground north western entrance. Catch a Seaford or Belair train, operating every day of the Show. In addition, Royal Show train shuttles will operate between Adelaide and Adelaide Showground stations during off-peak times to ensure a high frequency service.

Tram

From the Entertainment Centre to Glenelg, the tram passes through the city and is the perfect option for avoiding the roads and parking. Goodwood Road (stop 3) is just a five minute walk to and from the Leader Street gate.

Priceline Stadium, Mile End – Netball Stadium

Sealed and secure parking is available at Priceline Stadium (opposite Bunnings). Free coach transfer to and from the Royal Adelaide Show operates at regular intervals from 7am through to 11pm (Fridays) and 10.00pm (Sunday through Thursday) Cost of the parking is $12 per car per day. Not available Saturdays.

Food & Drinks

The Show has a wide range of food options available for all budgets, but we know eating out is always one of the most expensive things for families to do. You are permitted to BYO food, so why not pack a picnic and of course, bringing drink bottles from home is a huge saving (glass and alcohol are not permitted). By bringing lunch or dinner, you can then perhaps splurge on a Show treat here and there, such as an ice-cream, hot donuts or some fairy floss.

The Show Package Deal

The Family Value Pack may be the perfect way for you to budget your Show spending.  It includes:

  • Show entry for a family of 4 people (2 adults & 2 children or 1 adult & 3 children)
  • Food & drinks for 4 people
  • 2 x $10 Showbag vouchers (redeemable at any Showbag Outlet)
  • $40 of BankSA Discounted Ride coupons
  • Parking at the Priceline Stadium, Mile End excluding Saturdays when it’s at 219 Railway Terrace (includes FREE Shuttle bus to and from the Showground)

Extra child tickets are $48. Up to 3 additional Child Value Pack tickets can be purchased in conjunction with the purchase of the Family Value Pack (including Show entry for person 14 years or younger, food voucher, 1 x $10 showbag voucher, $20 BankSA Ride Coupons)

Valued at over $200, the Family Value Pack will allow you to know how much you’ll be spending in advance, as well as give everyone something to eat, fun rides and something to take home.

Rides Coupons

More Play & Go Tips:

♥   Set your child a savings goal to spend at the Show – pocket money, doing little jobs for family, friends and neighbours. Our kids have always regularly recycled cans and bottles, with the proceeds going to their ‘Show Fund’ each year.

♥   Plan your day – start planning ahead of time and set a budget before you go.  Let the kids know what they can expect to do and see without expecting to buy everything in sight!

♥   Find free things to do at The Show –  The Show has a fabulous list of free things to do included with your entry ticket. They also offer recommended itineraries.  Follow the Royal Adelaide Show Facebook page for daily tips.

♥   Head to the Main Arena for loads of action day and night – free entertainment includes cars, motorbikes, horses and of course the fireworks – all free to watch. We always love to watch the motorbike and car stunts shows leading into the fireworks.

♥   Yellow Brick Road  –  One of our favourite activities! The Yellow Brick Road is a regular family favourite at the Show (half a million people can’t be wrong!) which takes you on a journey around the entire showground, collecting goodies along the way. The cost is 2 bags for $20 or $12 each.

♥   Take a drink bottle for each person and if you need to refill it stop by the Show’s water fountain in the atrium (outside Venue Management Office).

♥    Make a wish list – go over the showbag catalogue and make a list of the showbags you plan to buy before you get to the show.  Set a limit.

♥    Visit the show on the last day – some exhibitors and showbag vendors will reduce their prices towards the end of the show so they don’t have to take left over stock home.

♥    ATMs usually charge withdrawal fees so bring enough cash with you, or use your EFTPOS card to keep track of your spending.

♥    Pick up a copy of the Show Magazine with more tips and savings.
