Illuminate Adelaide | New Annual Winter Light Event | Jun – Aug 2021

Illuminate Adelaide set to light up Winter in 2021 – Program Highlights

A new annual winter event takes over Adelaide’s city streets, laneways and buildings from June 2021 with light, art installations, immersive technology, music, performance, discussions and ideas.

Illuminate Adelaide has been launched as a world class event with a distinctively South Australian influence. This festival of light is a new event concept that celebrates the union between future technology and creative industries.

A program of free and ticketed events for all ages, Illuminate Adelaide will present projects exclusive to Adelaide, enticing visitors from across South Australia as well as interstate and overseas.

Home grown creative leaders, Rachael Azzopardi and Lee Cumberlidge join forces as Co-founders and Creative Directors working in collaboration with the city’s cultural, academic and science institutions.

This major event for South Australia will feature key local, national and international ‘makers’, in addition to local artists, cultural institutions and businesses and the state’s own entrepreneurial community.

Square Circles

Square Circles VR | 16-24 July 2021 | Queen’s Theatre, Adelaide

Square Circles VR is an immersive virtual reality work that draws upon William Barton’s Country, culture and dreaming. It uses emergent digital storytelling to create breathtaking visual landscapes, featuring Barton’s visceral music, along with friend and collaborator violist Stephen King and the Australian String Quartet (ASQ).

Set to a score performed and recorded by Barton and the ASQ on Peramangk Country at Ukaria Cultural Centre, this stunning blend of music and visual artistry from Go Patterson Films and Jumpgate VR offers a rare fusion of culture and technology.

Row | 16 Jul – 1 Aug 2021 | Queen’s Theatre, Adelaide

Science fiction promised us there would be holograms, and St Petersburg-based collective TUNDRA are here to deliver. Their new work Row uses a series of high speed LED fans to suspend a hypnotic array of shapes, patterns and meaning into the air in front of us. This curious installation offers a fascinating new way of visualising and sharing seemingly abstract data and messages through light and sound — a way of communicating that’s beyond words. The future is here, and it’s even more strange and beautiful than we pictured.

The Big Picture Series | 16 Jul – 1 Aug 2021 | West End, various locations

From city blocks to country silos, the last decade has seen street art techniques and mural traditions scale new and exhilarating heights. In an expanding urban world, these towering art projects are one eye-catching way to splash colour and humanity into public spaces.

Celebrated Adelaide street artist Vans the Omega has assembled an international dream team of visual and conceptual artists and set them loose upon the city’s west end.

These seven projects give artists and audiences alike a chance to reinterpret and respond to the architecture and social fabric of urban spaces, and how we use, share and shape a sense of place.

Patch Theatre @ The Studio | 19 Jun – 1 Aug 2021 | Art Gallery of South Australia

With the support of the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation, Patch will commandeer The Studio at AGSA for the first time. Drawing inspiration from a work by Czech-Australian Surrealist Dušan Marek, a painting concurrently on display in AGSA’s major exhibition Surrealists at Sea, Patch will create a glowing interactive sea floor. Art lovers of all ages are invited to immerse themselves in this Surrealist experience and ‘draw in light.’

Firefly Field | 16 Jul – 1 Aug 2021 | University of Adelaide

Before fireworks and festivals, the humble firefly was the animal kingdom’s greatest late-night performer. The sight of bioluminescent Lampyridae in the night sky has long captured human imaginations, but its beauty also lies in the essential, unique role these light shows play in each species’ life cycle. Life, death and rebirth are all tied up in these tiny, flickering points of light – is it any wonder we can’t look away?

In an eye-catching light installation, Studio Toer (Netherlands) has crafted a large-scale natural phenomenon. Having appeared in Shanghai, the Faroe Islands, Diriyah and Vivid Sydney, Firefly Field will now transform the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace lawns into a shimmering display of 200 floating LEDs lights that glow, dance and enchant.
