Easy Chocolate Brownies | Kids Recipe

easy chocolate brownies

We have been searching for a super easy Chocolate Brownie recipe. After much trial and error, a bit of experimenting (and a lot of brownie eating!!) we’re finally happy with this one. It’s simple enough that my 9 year old daughter can make it completely on her own without any help. Something she is very pleased about. It’s a brownie which has a bit of a crust on the outside, but gooey, chewy, chocolatey and fudgy on the inside (especially when eaten while it’s still warm).

What You Need

  • 125g Butter
  • 220g Chocolate (we use 1 block of Cadbury Dairy Dark Chocolate or you can use chocolate buttons or any chocolate you like)
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Essence
  • 3/4 cup Castor Sugar
  • 1 cup Plain Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • rectangle slice tray 20cm x 31cm (or something similar) lined with non-stick baking paper

What to Do

1. Preheat the oven to 170°C fan forced. Line the baking tray with non-stick baking paper and place to one side.

2. Break the chocolate into small pieces (if using a block). Melt the chocolate in the microwave using medium heat for about 1 minute. We use a 2 litre jug. Add the butter to the chocolate. Then do short bursts of no more than 10 to 20 seconds at a time until the chocolate is melted. {Tip: Be careful not to overheat or it may sieze. Usually when most of it is melted, if you stir it a bit, the rest will melt without any more heating}.

You can of course melt the chocolate in a bowl over a saucepan of hot water if you prefer, but the microwave method is safer for kids.

3. Beat eggs in a separate bowl or cup. Add the eggs and vanilla essence to melted chocolate and beat to combine. We beat just with a wooden spoon by hand but you can use an electric hand mixer if you like. Tip: Make sure your melted chocolate and butter isn’t too hot or the eggs will cook – wait until the chocolate cools down a bit if necessary, before adding the eggs.

4. Add castor sugar, flour and baking powder. Stir well to combine. Pour into the baking tray.

5. Bake for 30 minutes. Test with skewer or tooth pick – it should come out fairly clean. You do not want to over bake to keep the centre soft and a bit gooey.

6. Remove from oven. Cool on a wire rack. You can shake some icing sugar on the top; add a ganache or chocolate icing, but it’s yummy just on its own.

Tip: they are delicious to eat when still warm!
