National Science Week 2021
There will be in-person and online events, virtual tours, DIY science and more, all across Australia, from 14 – 22 August 2021 for National Science Week.
National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. Running each year in August, it features more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres.
This year, there is a mix of online and local events in South Australia.
Highlight Events & Activities for Children in SA
There are 63 local events to be held in South Australia this National Science week and 118 online events. Here are a few highlights:
Space School for Kids – UniSA Mawson Lakes | Saturday 14 & 21 August 2021
Join highly experienced astronomers where you will learn all about the stars and make a constellation. You will then head into the Planetarium for an interactive session where you can marvel at the immense scale of the Universe and observe the breath-taking beauty of the night skies projected on the eight-metre domed ceiling, as well as watch a full dome movie.
After the Planetarium session, you will then have the chance to create your own Solar System using Playdough while learning the facts about each planet. Space School for Kids is a 4-hour fun-filled space session for kids aged between 7-12 years. Bring a drink bottle, snack and lunch. $15 entry.
A Day of Science at Walkerville | Saturday 14 August 2021 | FREE
Walkerville Library are running a special Saturday session to celebrate National Science Week, children are invited to participate in many activities including virtual reality, a sustainability workshop, perfect poo workshop, 3D pens, milk marbling, iPad game, OSMOS cooking and 3D printing.
Bookings required for some workshops.
Campbelltown Library Robot Day | Saturday 21 August 2021 | FREE
A free family event with robots, VR experiences, a chance to drive robots built by robotics clubs, micro-computing displays, CAD workshops & more. Rotary sausage sizzle and a coffee van will be there on the day.
The event is free to attend, but bookings are needed for the Robotics & CAD Workshop activities.
Habitat Hedegrows – Brown Hill Creek | Saturday 14 August 2021 | FREE
In this hands-on family-friendly workshop, particiapnts will learn why protecting native bandicoot and berry habitat is so important. Hosted by Dr Jasmin Packer, Wildlife Ecologist, with special guests Dr Chris Brodie, Weed Ecologist with South Australian Herbarium, and Professor Gus Nathan, sustainability specialist with University of Adelaide.
Bring your own loppers or secateurs, and you can create a habitat hedgerow from scratch.
Science Alive! | Wayville | RESCHEDULED 20 & 21 November 2021
Science Alive! is the largest mobile science exhibition in Australia, bringing together the big names in science and technology.
There are over 60 exhibitors at Adelaide Showground with interactive, fun, dynamic and educative displays designed to spark the curiosity in all of us, plus science shows for all ages. Go along to and enjoy a fantastic family day out and learn about how science and technology affects our everyday lives.
