New Year’s Eve in Adelaide – Your Guide to Family Friendly New Year Celebrations
New Year’s Eve – Thursday 31 December 2020
After a year like no other, we all deserve to celebrate the beginning of a brand new year with our friends and family, grateful for surviving the testing times we have all had to endure in 2020. Sadly there won’t be the usual fireworks events to enjoy, but we have plenty of ideas to see in the new year.
The Play & Go team wish you and your families a safe and Happy New Year in 2021, full of good health, plenty of laughter, new family adventures and endless fun.
CELEBRATE AT HOME
Have a party at home with friends and family – keep it simple with a BBQ or have everyone bring a plate to share.
♥ Glow sticks are a must for the kids as well as sparklers and party poppers.
♥ Lots of balloons or coloured balls on a trampoline is a favourite with our kids.
♥ Water balloons if it’s warm.
♥ Getting the good old Slip n Slide out is always fun.
♥ If you have little ones, turn your clocks forward a few hours so you can do the ‘midnight’ countdown a few hours earlier.
♥ Open up those boxes of chocolates you received for Christmas to share on New Year’s Eve – it’s a great way to use up some or all of these treats.
♥ We also love this idea of a ‘Year End Interview’ with the kids by Hands On: as we grow. Ask the kids some questions about their favourite things right now, as a keepsake. You could get them to write it down or make a video. Get the free printable here.
CITY OF ADELAIDE
The City of Adelaide recommends getting your friends or family together and booking a spot at your favourite city restaurant, bar or café to bring in 2021. Families can enjoy New Year’s Eve by exploring some of the many attractions the city has to offer in the early evening, or by booking an early sitting at a family friendly restaurant.
(The City of Adelaide’s New Year’s Eve Party in Elder Park and on the Riverbank will not go ahead this year. The decision not to hold a public event or fireworks in Elder Park followed ongoing consultation with SA Health and SA Police and a detailed risk profile of the event in relation to covid-19)
RIDE THE GIANT FERRIS WHEEL
The Giant Ferris Wheel in Glenelg is open from 10am until 9.30pm daily. Located on the foreshore at the end of Moseley Square, it’s the tallest portable wheel of its kind in Australia, with 24 gondolas each seating up to six people.
HOT DUB TIME MACHINE
Join the biggest Hot Dub live stream and ultimate party soundtrack ever this NYE! There will be two shows: 6pm-8pm for families and 10pm-12:30am from right in front of the Sydney Harbour fireworks. Both shows will be completely FREE, live-streamed on Twitch.
PLEASE NOTE: this is a completely free event available on the Twitch website or app. You don’t need to give anyone your information or pay a fee to access it. HERE IS THE LIVE STREAM LINK: https://www.twitch.tv/hotdubtimemachine
PICNIC AT THE BEACH
Take a picnic or pick up your favourite takeaway and head to the beach to celebrate by the sea. Take chairs, blankets and towels and some games to play, such as beach cricket, a frisbee or a simple bucket and spade for building sand castles. Enjoy an early dinner of fish and chips then stay to watch the sunset before lighting up some sparklers and opening some glow sticks.
PICNIC AT THE PARK
If you prefer to keep away from the sand, head to your local park for a picnic on the grass. Many parks have BBQ facilities, or simply take a picnic or pick up takeaway from a nearby cafe or restaurant. Take extra seats as park benches and tables are often already taken. Playgrounds offer hours of free fun and you won’t have a mess to clean up at home!
BBL T20 CRICKET
The tradition of New Year’s Eve T20 cricket at Adelaide Oval continues in 2020 when the Adelaide Strikers take on the Perth Scorchers. Tickets are limited.
SPLASH – Murray Bridge
The SPLASH Family Festival returns to Sturt Reserve for its third year with a jam-packed program of activities by day and by night in Murray Bridge, including a family friendly New Year’s Eve event to kick start the festivities on the Sturt Reserve foreshore.
SEMAPHORE SUMMER CARNIVAL
The Semaphore Summer Carnival opens daily from 11am during the summer holidays. They won’t have fireworks this year, but you can still take the family along for some carnival fun.
VICTOR HARBOR FIREWORKS
Victor Harbor New Year’s Eve celebrations will go ahead with midnight fireworks to see in 2021.
There will be a midnight fireworks display on New Year’s Eve for the local community and visitors staying in the area. The midnight fireworks display aims to mark the end of a challenging year, offering our residents a symbol of hope for the year ahead.
The fireworks can be viewed from many private residences and holiday homes spread across Victor Harbor’s 10km of coastline.
To keep their community safe:
- There will be no event on Warland Reserve
- The Granite Island Causeway itself will close to the public from 6pm.
- The Causeway Plaza will be closed to the public between 11pm and 1am to ensure safe delivery of the fireworks.
- Girdlers amusement park will close at 11pm.
- Dry zones will be in place from 3pm on 31 December 2020 until 9am on 1 January 2021, and the consumption of alcohol is not permitted in Victor Harbor’s public spaces during this time.
Security guards and SA Police will be patrolling coastal areas to monitor and guide people and they ask that everyone adheres to the SA Health guidelines and maintains social distancing.
However you decide to celebrate the start of the New Year please stay safe and have a wonderful time!
We hope 2021 brings good health, happiness, fun times and special moments to treasure.
